I get around 27 days annual leave a year plus public holidays. In my last job if i worked on a public holiday i would get the time back in lieu and acru another holiday plus enhanced pay.
Sick pay is paid for i think its full pay in the first month and decreases as the longer you are off. Ive never had that long off to know lol just saw the entitlement in my contract
Maternity/paternity is usually paid for 9 months. First 6 weeks it is at 90% of your wage, and decreases as you go along. You can take 12 months last 3 are unpaid. Now maternity can be split between the father and mother whoever chooses to go back first. you have to have 2 weeks off minimum after the birth of your child after that you can come back to work.
I work in the NHS so this is how my leave entitlement is set out.

6 weeks of paid vacation pr year is usually the standard here, however it depends a bit upon where you work and what you do. While I’m not off on public holidays, my husband is because he works in a private firm, but he pays for his own lunch hour while mine is paid by the work place.
Maternity leave is 1 year, you can start it 4 weeks before the due date. If you’ve a medical condition or you work in a place which isn’t suitable for your condition, you can take a sick leave which is also paid.
Your child’s first sick day is also paid, if you need more time, you use your own sick leave, but again it depends upon where you work, if your job allows it, you can just work from home etc.
I usually take all my vacation days within the year.

a few days before I got married I accepted a job offer from Citicorp. The guys who interviewed me knew that and I told them I would be going on honeymoon on labour day weekend which they said was okay, usually there was some policy about month end and quarter end etc but they said my case would be an exception.
I started and had a total asshat as a manager, told me 2 weeks before the trip that I could not go and if I went I am done. So we ended up forfeiting. A fully paid trip to Hawaii. A combo of fear of losing job as someone expected to be responsible and all so put up with a lot. Good learning experience because that extreme example helped me just be stronger and not be a doormat. I did not escalate it and then much later when I told the VP who initially interviewed me that I was not pleased with the place and gave that as an example he told me I should have escalated and that the manager was fired for many such lame bullying things.
Horrible job and team, when this ass got fired and one of his bosses took over who had other issues. One company that I had no issue burning any bridges with, gave them my notice and that I am taking vacation so essentially I am on vacation my last 3 weeks. Good learning experience in hindsight, really made me with being assertive in workplace because in the end it’s just work, let BS slide off, know your rights and don’t back down against bullies.

^ talking about horrible managers.. I have one… ( also in the financial industry… )… one of my team members is due to take 2 weeks off soon…manager asks him if he is flexible about the time… the guy just stares at him… his wife was pregnant and full term…
@X2 i hope you made it up to your wife… our family members sacrifice a lot for our careers and many times we don’t even realize it

The manager that demanded to see the death certificate from me was eventually fired for her repeated liquid lunches and being drunk/ locking herself into her office. She’d sit in her office and just stare at the walls, sometimes take a nap. Eventually the higher ups realized something was up and started “randomly” visiting.
She didn’t last a week after these visits started.
But the new manager wasn’t any better. I gave my notice and the day before my expected last day, the new manager literally begged me to stay a few more days because she needed help. I agreed that I would stay one more week. The week I stayed, she left for vacation LOL

You’re right. But at the same time, we sacrifice a lot of family time for our careers MAINLY so that, in the end, we can make our family members happy.

This is a skewed statement (typical sensational journalism). I dont know if anyone is touched upon this or not in this thread, but your time off is built into your annual salary. Tehre are about 2000 working hours per year, for a salary based person. If your salary is 100K with 2 weeks time off, then it means that teh job is worth 104K, but company is paying you less to compensate for the time off. So saying that paid time off is costing us 50 billion UDS is a fabricated fact

Technically it’s not fabricated, @TLK … because either way, you’re losing out on that pay.
Also, not everyone is salaried. A lot of people are paid hourly, meaning they’re only paid for the hours worked… and they earn their time off by working… And the only way they get paid during their time off is if they utilize their paid leave time. This doesn’t increase their yearly salary, because as you said, it’s included in their expected salary.
For example, $15/hr * 40 hrs/ week * 52 weeks = $31,200 for the year.. So if this person works all 40 hrs every week, they will take home 31,200 (pre-tax). But if this person doesn’t work the full 40 hrs, and doesn’t have paid leave, that salary will drop. However, if they do have paid time off available, they can take time off from work and not have their pay take a hit.
And if they have paid time available… and they don’t use it, technically, they are working for free… because the allotted paid time available is calculated in their benefit package when salaries/ pay are decided
