MKI is a Multi-role fighter itself. However its expensive to operate and maintain. Its main advantage is its long range and huge ordnance carriage with so many hard points.
IAF uses Mig-29 as main Air superiority fighter. Mirage-2000 is for ground attack but has multi-role capability and it proved itself in Kargil bombing runs and attacks, whereas migs(23 and 27) were a failure.
Jaguar, Mig 21, Mig 27 need to be replaced. But the main problem is that apart from replacing, IAF is already down on its sanctioned strength by 4-6 squadrons.
A total of atleast 300+ aircraft need to be replaced and currently IAF’s strength is low on squadrons.
For MRCA , the RFP was floated in 2007, with tech evaluations starting in 2008 and over in 2009, and keeping in mind that 126 aircraft will need to be made, 2015 is too early a date for induction even.
IAF is flying 6 types atleast and retiring 3 will bring 4 more in (LCA/MRCA/FGFA/MCA), where as PAF is flying 6 types and retain only 3(JF-17,F-16,FC-20) from 2015 onwards. and bear in mind all these are single engined jets.
I am aware of permanent commission.
