Packing for Hospital

Give me advice on essentials needed to pack in hospital bag (from experience). When I do a search on internet I get 50+ things needed…etc…and wanted more practical advice what you actually need/use. My last delivery was almost 3 years ago…so yeah I forgot.

Thanks in advance.

Also I am 35 weeks along, I guess I should get packing soon eh.

Re: Packing for Hospital

Afro, do you know what your hospital provides? mine provided pads, disp panties etc. The only thing that i took and used was my own toiletries, a long nightie and slippers and bring home outfit for baby. Dont forget camera and cell phone charger. The rest they provided for both baby and me. I also took pillows but theirs were pretty comfy. Take some snacks too incase you deliver at a time when no food is avalible although where i was at, they proided cereal, crackers, milk, juice etc.

Good luck with the bag. I had half packed mine and the rest my husband packed while i was having bad contractions and i was wishing he would hurry up already!

Re: Packing for Hospital

Take your toiletries, a change of clothes for yourself and baby, underwear (a nursing bra included). You will need a carseat and a blankie for the baby also. That's it. The hospital usually gives you a starter diaper bag with loads of diapers, baby wipes, pacifier, bottle, formula etc. Also, they will give you the pads you need.

Re: Packing for Hospital

In addition to what Nikki has listed I took my own pillow. Just cuz I am fussy that way.

Take clothes for yourself if u want to change after delivery, panty, nursing bra, tooth brush, toothpaste, facial cream, new clothes for baby, burping cloth needed if people come to see baby, hair brush, camera, car seat, lipstick after delivery u may want to look fresh :D.Some choclates if u want to eat after delivery :D I did that just to take away the pregnancy blues.I ate my favorite choclate.

If I remember more things I'll write it down.

Re: Packing for Hospital

chocolates & lemon drops...those are yumm after delivery.

yes, don't forget the camera!

Re: Packing for Hospital

I am due in a week but my baby hasn't really come down so I think it'll prolly take me a few more weeks.. but I hav my bag ready to go. Here's what I packed regardless of whether the hospital provides it or not:

For myself:
panties, bra, pads, nursing pads, loose pj, tshirt, socks, toiletries (travel sized toothbrush, toothpaste, deo, face wash, soap, 2in1 shampoo), a hair clip (one of those that Im always using), a lil box of kleenex.

For the baby: 0 sized diapers, wipes, and 2 sets of clothing in pink and yellow. Each set includes 3 bodysuits, 2 casual receiving blankets, 3 burp cloths. We didn't find out the gender of our baby so obv I packed both colors incase it's either. I also picked this one very nice receiving blanket.. it's all furry and has a cute lil bug on it. It's yellow and goes with both the yellow and pink ensembles. (Also don't forget to already wash your baby clothes in baby detergent before you pack em..)

I also packed all my hospital paperwork (even tho I already filled it all in on the fone).. and a lil notepad and a pen with it.

You know how you're supossed to call in before you leave for the hospital, so I put that number in mine and my hub's cellie. (My brain stops workin if I'm in a rush...)

Obv when we leave for the hospital I'd be carryin my handbag with me .. that already has this lil case of basic makeup that I carry with me, and wallet (with all essential identification in it)

And that's abt it.. my husband would be with me IA so I haven't really packed any food, plus I doubt I'll hav the heart to eat or listen to music at that time..

Re: Packing for Hospital

Oooh you know what else i am glad i took? a hair band to catch my hair so itw asnt in my face during labor.

I am due in a week and half so today I will start packing my bag soon.

We get most of the disposable things at the hospital like diapers, pads, nursing pads, disposable panties, baby body suits, burp cloths and hospital cloths for the mama and kid, that u can change everday. So will not take these things with me.

The things I need to take along, is slippers with rubber soal.
A warm gawn that I can wear on my hospital cloths, just in case I get some visit or am feeling cold
socks
nursing bras!
my toileteries, like facewash, shampoo and body wash, tooth brush and tooth paste
(please dont use perfume or deo with parfume for the first few weeks and it irriates the newborn, the new born needs to smell the mother's natural fragerance, thats why i have bought ph-netural and fragerance free washing stuff.)

some cosmetic that will be in my purse, will be decent brown colour lipstick, foundation and of course my mascara and eyeliner.
face cream
hand cream
hairbrush and hair bands

for the baby, i have a cosy blanket, will pack two suits for the ride back home.

yes the camera, charger, ur mobile and the charger.
pen and a small notebook for any notes that u might want to make
my book that i have been reading .. one that i have not finished, its about breastfeeding.

my Id card, bank card and my pregnancy book (thats the most important thing) as its needs to be filled by the hospital.

The paper work will be done after i get home.

I am also taking lavendel essential oil it should calm me during the contractions.

Re: Packing for Hospital

I think i am forgetting somethings, will update if I am.

Thanks!! This is such a regular thing but I am known to loose my hair bands and i really would need one in the hospital. I plan to get a haircut before due date as my hair is too long, easier to manage.

I like the idea of lemon drops. Well I can't really do much chocolate/sweets but I do think it's a great idea to take snacks, surely great reminder. Maybe granola bars or some almonds/nuts etc....cuz the hospital food sucks, and usually not enough. I remember we asked for Kosher last time, and even though I can eat it, not sure why but I was totalllllly grossed out at the meat dishes and couldnt eat. So then had hubby bring me plain chicken soup as I still couldnt have any regular solids, just soft stuff.

Re: Packing for Hospital

Well I totally loved my hospital food the last time, thats why I selected this hospital again, one of the many reasons. I had the vegetarian meal and it was enough.
For breakfast we had a buffet, there was so many different cheese, breads, yoghurt and fruits that I was in heaven. :cb:
Maybe the food tasted better after the baby was out.

Re: Packing for Hospital

I know the hospital priovdes the gown so I dont need to bring that, just pajamas maybe as the gowns are only knee high and i feel uncomfy when daddy or bhai visit. Maybe i will ask for veggie food this time. Did most people here have natural delivery? Not sure how soon after natural delivery you can eat, but I had a c-section. I was not even allowed water the 1st day. I had an IV in me and then moved to soft "food" like soft bread, jello, pudding, soda, juices only. Once you have bowel, then you are allowed to have more normal food. :(

So I am thinking:
* coming home outfit for baby, including socks, booties, hat, blanket etc.
* coming home outfit for me, loose yoga pants, so if it is c-section again (most likely) it wont hurt incision
*Heavy duty pads
* hospital provides mesh undies but i think i'll bring my own as well
*high fiber snacks
* I like idea of my own socks
* Toiletries
* Realized I will need a belly band for tummy
* Id & paperwork, just remembered i need copies of everything doc gave me for delivery
* Like idea of baby book, i can get them to directly add baby's footprints to my own book instead of on a random piece of paper

Hmm what else now

Re: Packing for Hospital

Afro i was able to eat right away after delivering. Since i labored, delivered and recovered in the same room, i didnt have to wait to move etc either. Btw my hospital had awesome food!

Re: Packing for Hospital

Does the lavender essential oil really work??????

Re: Packing for Hospital

^ don't really know but its suppose to calm (we will see)... u can also put some drops in the warm bath.

Re: Packing for Hospital

im sure u have ure answers by now

i packed a whole lot but my baby was 10 days late and i went realistic on my hospital bag (which i packed at the last minute :D )..and ended up taking a whole lot out

i only took the bringing home outfit for the baby

gown for myself and 2 change of clothes and slippers.. and nursing bra

oh and toiletries..

husbands clothing too.. like pjs.

my hospital provided me with everything a baby will need and even gave me a whole lot to take home

i could not have at all fit into my underwear so was glad when they gave me cosy granny panties which i could just throw away .. and they gave me a clean pair everyday adn even some to take home.. as well as those huge bladder control kinda pads ...

we didnt take any snacks cuz our hospital was loaded .. any time any thing we wanted.. we could get..

like a hotel

seriously thinking of getting pregnant again
