Packing for Hajj...

All those that have performed Hajj or have info, you valuable insight and tips are needed…

Jeddah - Is it true the wait in Hajj terminal is 3-4 + hours?

How many checkpoints between Jeddah and Mecca and how long does the coach journey take? Please tell me the 3-4 hr rumours are wrong :bummer:

Luggage - How much did you pack for the pilgrimage in terms of clothes?

What about slippers? - I heard they get stolen, lost or just taken by others so is it worth buying expensive slippers (comfortable ones) or just have a load of cheap ones? Can you take them into the Haram by hand and place them next to where you pray? How about during tawaf, it is practical to place them in a gym bag wrapped around your back?

Tawaf - How long does tawaf take on the upper levels compared to the crowded ground level?

Money - how much should you take with you, and when there, how much cash should you carry around in your body pouch?

Security :maulvidis - Do they body search everyone before entering the Haram? Is there any way you could sneek in a digicam/camfone? Would strapping it to your waist work? :smooth:

Can you take food items into the Haram?

Mina/Muzdalifah/Arafah - How much luggage/items did you take with you? Is a backpack or gym bag enough?

Would a blanket suffice for the night in Muzdalifah or would you recommend taking a sleeping bag?

Saudi Police :2guns: - are they really nutcases or are these just stories?

Pickpockets :hoonh: - Any tips to spot them?

Thanks in advance, wsalam

Re: Packing for Hajj…

Jeddah - Is it true the wait in Hajj terminal is 3-4 + hours?

No, it is usually a lot longer … well at least for Canadians. We were told before going to expect to wait at the Hajji terminal for at least a minimum of 8-12 hours. We got out of immigration fairly quickly. We got our luggage quickly too. The staff there were great. However, we had to wait about 10 hours for the bus to pick us up. It wasn’t in our control, or our Hajj group’s control at all. So, in total, we spent about 12-15 hours at the airport.

Beware of the washrooms at the terminal. They are literally filthy holes in the ground.

How many checkpoints between Jeddah and Mecca and how long does the coach journey take? Please tell me the 3-4 hr rumours are wrong :bummer:

I think it was over an hour, but I can’t give you exact hours as I slept through most of the journey.

Luggage - How much did you pack for the pilgrimage in terms of clothes?

Well you are in the same Ihram during all of Hajj, so you probably will need another Ihram for umrah and maybe one more cause it will probably get dirty. It’s up to you how much ‘western’ clothes you take, but you won’t be needing it during Hajj. A little tip, if you end up getting sick and go to the doctors after Hajj is over, if you are in western clothes, you will get better treatment. Don’t forget to pack a small towel too!

Just take a cheap pair of flip flops. You *can *take shoes inside with you, but it’s rude to do so, don’t you think? Would you take your shoes into a masjid in London? Probably not. So why would anybody do that in the most holiest places? This really pissed me off cause people would be carrying their shoes inside, and believe me, they get in the way, while you are reading namaz, while you are trying to kiss the Kaba, your shoes will be rubbing up against it … it’s just shoes, leave it outside. I would just leave mine outside. If someone takes them, which they probably will, so what?

Tawaf - How long does tawaf take on the upper levels compared to the crowded ground level?

It’s long. The closer you are to the Kaba, the shorter the tawaf is, but the closer you are, the more intense the crowd is, the more harder it becomes to breath. Keep that in mind. We did two tawafs on the main floor and they took just over an hour I think. One we did on the middle level and it took up to 3 hours cause it’s a lot longer. It depends on you, how much energy you have, etc.

Money - how much should you take with you, and when there, how much cash should you carry around in your body pouch?

I don’t know, my dad dealt with that.

Security :maulvidis - Do they body search everyone before entering the Haram? Is there any way you could sneek in a digicam/camfone? Would strapping it to your waist work? :smooth:

They do check you before you go in. No, they check the women cause they hide stuff under their abayas. You can sneak a camera in and take pics with your cell phone, but keep in mind, there are cameras in there watching you and they will find you if they see you with a camera. That risk is totally up to you … and bear in mind, it’s forbidden for a reason.

Can you take food items into the Haram?

I believe so.

Mina/Muzdalifah/Arafah - How much luggage/items did you take with you? Is a backpack or gym bag enough?

You aren’t changing your clothes. You aren’t using any soap or toothpaste … you don’t really need anything other than a pillow and a sleeping blanket.

Would a blanket suffice for the night in Muzdalifah or would you recommend taking a sleeping bag?

It will be COLD. Take a sleeping blanket.

Saudi Police :2guns: - are they really nutcases or are these just stories?

Well, all we saw them doing our entire time there was literally sitting on their backsides smoking under the big “no smoking” signs. You can ask them for directions or help, and they will ignore you. They ignored us when we asked them questions so I know.

Pickpockets :hoonh: - Any tips to spot them?

During tawwaf, be careful. We thankfully never had any problems, but we were told that was the time they like to strike.

Re: Packing for Hajj…

Interesting tips, thanks :k:

I must say I’m looking forward to the wait at Jeddah airport :bummer: How much hand luggage did you carry there?

I did hear about people holding their shoes whilst touching the Kaaba. Don’t the guards nearby do anything? My plan is to either place my nice comfy slippers in a gym bag wrapped around me or wear cheap slippers and leave them outside.

Okay, so how long does one have to wait in the crowd to touch the Kaaba? On my own I know I’ll be fine but my concern is when I’m with my mom and trying to keep hold of her.

What are the toiletry/washroom facilities like in Muzdalifah? I heard theres 1 toilet per 100 people, they’re disgusting and the ques are very long, any truth to that? :bummer: Sounds gross but do elder pilgrims wet themselves during the wait?

Also what were your experiences with food when out in Mina/Muzdalifah and Arafat? I know this largely depends on your agency but one family friend was fed daal constantly for 3 days (before she complained) and another’s group was without food for over 12 hours and had to rely on handouts from other pilgrims. I know this shouldn’t be a big issue, but I’m curious and want to be prepared as much as possible. We’ve already been told to take high energy biscuits along.
Thanks in advance :k:

Re: Packing for Hajj…

The guards in the Haram won’t really do anything. They will yell at you if you get tired and sit against the wall. This one elderly couple, they were Turkish or from eastern Europe somewhere, didn’t know any English or Arabic … basically, the woman was tired and she sat against the wall during sa’ee and the guard (who was lying down on the ledge) kept wacking his baton above her head against the wall screaming at her to get up. I know you aren’t supposed to sit down there cause there are people coming and going and it is a very busy spot. However, you don’t need to terrify the old woman by repeatedly wacking your stick above her head. I was disturbed by this cause she was an old woman and he was lying down himself. Anyway, no, they won’t stop you or do anything if you carry your shoes in. I did see some people try and sneak a camera in and the guard pulled on the guy’s Ihram while he tried to run into the masjid and there was a dispute between them. I really wouldn’t mess with them if I were you.

We didn’t take much luggage with us. We each had hand luggage, one of those small suitcases we could roll and we took one with us to Mina as well. It was fairly handy.

I won’t lie to you. The washroom situation is horrendous everywhere, including the airport. Most of the washrooms are holes in the ground with a shower head directly above it. So, I would advise you against showering there cause you could slip. For me, the washrooms in Mina were the worst. The cleaners were not cleaning them and there was an extremely bad odour … :bummer: … it made it extremely difficult for me cause I am a hygiene/neat freak. There were maybe two or three ‘western’ type toilets in every set of washrooms. The good thing was that most of the western toilets were empty cause most people preferred using the hole system.

Mind you, my dad and brother didn’t have the same complaints as us women about the washrooms cause the men were not doing the kind of things women were doing in the washroom area.

You have to bear in mind, there will be long line ups and most people do not speak any English. Their habits won’t be the same as yours or mine. You need to have a lot of patience. They may bully you and push you out of the way too. :frowning: I don’t know if they wet themselves during the wait. It is really hard for elderly people though. My nani ammi was with us and it was hard for her cause we had to find a western type toilet for her everywhere and most places just didn’t have it.

As for food … our Hajj group provided us with food, 3 meals a day. Before Hajj, they gave us a lot of foods that wouldn’t give us an upset stomach. They planned their menu out fairly well. We went with Gujrati people so it was Gujrati style food everyday, which isn’t really my cup of tea, but oh well.

I heard about a big bazaar in Mina before going, but we never saw it. I don’t think you can really buy proper food there. Maybe someone else can answer that. Take along the energy biscuits, they will come in handy.

It is possible to get close to the Kaba but it is difficult cause of the crowd. Hold on tightly to your mother if you do want to go that close.

Re: Packing for Hajj...

^ Very informative, thanks.

Are the coach journeys between Mecca-Mina-Arafah-Muzdalifah long or did you chose to walk? If so, how long did it take?

And when at Arafah, did you get to climb far up the mountain?

Re: Packing for Hajj...

The bus journeys are long. Mainly cause of the traffic. You *can *walk if you want to, it takes maybe an hour and loads of people prefer to walk after the stoning back to their hotels in Mecca.

The problem with the buses is that if the bus driver has a fight with another bus driver, they will just be yelling at each other in arabic saying, "khalas", turn the buses off and just sit in the middle of the street. They don't exactly care much about the passengers in the bus. We exeperienced this quite a lot during Hajj when trying to go back to Mina. What should have been a simple journey would take many hours cause some bus drivers in front of us were arguing, holding the rest of us up.

At Arafat, some mountains are small enough to climb, some are much larger. It's totally up to you. My brother and I climbed one just outside of tent city in Mina, and it was difficult cause it is loose rocks and you are wearing flip flop sandals. It's up to you though.

I posted a lot of pictures from Hajj, Mecca and Madina earlier this year. You should check out that thread to get an idea of what the landscape is like.
