Pack n play vs crib

What’s the point of a pack n play? It looks like a sort of crib to me. Which ones more useful? If I get a crib, do I need a pack n play too? I’m a lost mama.

Re: Pack n play vs crib

From what I’ve seen pack n play is usually smaller in size, at least here. So I wouldn’t necessarily invest in both. I would buy the baby crib.

Re: Pack n play vs crib

I posted in this other thread the difference between the two. But here it is again:

A travel cot is a short time use , its not as solid, nor is it as spacious nor will it grow with your child. The benefit of it is that you will love it if you have limited space in your room and want to set up the baby temporarily in it and later invest in a cot or a cot bed and move the baby there . Also if you travel alot and want to ensure that your baby is comfortable you can take this with you its light and can be carried easily.

A cot or a cot bed is a one time investment. In particular a cot bed. Its heavy and strong , so when the baby turns 6 months and starts standing up and jumping about, the cot will take the baby’s weight and it wont get damaged that easily either , like the mesh in the travel cot , can get damaged if a child is a bit aggressive. That is not the case in the cot.

Eventually when the child turns two , if you have a cot bed , you can remove its side panels leaving only the head and the foot board and convert it into a baby bed. Or remove just one side panel and make it a secure bed cum sofa for the child.

The use of a pack and play will last you until a child is less then a year old. While the use of a cot will last you until the child is around two years of age or at the most three years .. and the Cot Bed will last you for a very long time , can be used for a five year old as a single bed and then later as their seating space for many years .. its strong enough to last that long.

What you want to buy , depends on your budget. In my opinion, the pack and play is like a luxury. Its like many parents buy a moses basket , but eventually you do need to invest in a cot as well .. but they are happy with that because they can afford it. But if you are looking for a one time investment , then this is not your option , go for a cot bed instead.

Hope this helps

Re: Pack n play vs crib

I have a better experience with the play pen than with the cot, so much so that I gave the first wooden cot away. I use the bassinet and side pouches to keep diapers, wipes, change of clothes, bibs etc that I may need immediately, also play pen can be moved, it stays by the side of my bed at might, can be turned into a play yard later. It collapses for travelling and can be set up in hotels and other people’s homes. I already have the kids room set up with beds where the baby will transition at 1.5-2 years to sleep with the elder sibling.

Re: Pack n play vs crib

i put a play yaard in our family room and a crib in our bedroom
and take the play yard with me when i go to my moms house - it packs in like 10 seconds

Re: Pack n play vs crib

I feel like eventually I will need the play pen when the baby is older for ex if no one is home and I need to run to the bathroom but the baby crawls, I can place the baby in the play pen.
I guess I can buy it later. Baby things are too overpriced!
