Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Three pace bowlers to get training in Indian academy

*From Abdul Mohi Shah

*ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to send three promising pace bowlers, most probably from the A and junior teams’ set up, to get training from the former Australian great Dennis Lillee at the MRF Academy in India.

The Australia bowling legend had been training the pace bowlers in India for over a decade now and has succeeded in producing a crop of pace bowlers for the Indian cricket.

The PCB is also planning to send three or four pace bowlers to get training at the academy to get training under Lillee. “The matter of sending bowlers to train in India has been discussed in the PCB top brass meeting and most of the PCB officials including the selectors favoured the idea of sending the bowlers to the Lillee run academy,” a PCB official told ‘The News’.

Leading Indian fast bowlers like Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Parsad, Zaheer Khan and Balaji all got training at the Lillee run MRF academy and later served or are still serving Indian cricket. “There is no doubt that when it comes to talent, Pakistan pacers are much higher placed than that of India. However, what they need is proper coaching and guidance from a renowned coach and expert in the field. If we consider this aspect then there is no better place around than the academy run by Lillee in India,” the official said.

“The training at the Indian Academy would be cheaper when compared to the Australian Academy. Training three or four fast bowlers at the Australian academy and looking after their all expenditure would be definitely cost very high. However, the training expenditures at the MRF academy in Madras would be cheaper in comparison,” the official said.

Lillee’s academy in India imparts training to different age groups including under-15, 17, 19, and 22. However, it is expected that Pakistan would only send those bowlers for training who fall in the A category. “Those who are knocking at the doors of Test cricket or played one or two Tests and or improving day by day would be sent for training,” the official said.

The bowlers are expected to join the academy in summer and those would be considered for selection who are available and are not engaged with any club or county in England. “However, if some promising players engaged with clubs in England are willing to get training, their case could also be considered,” he said.

The bowlers had been getting training at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore off and on but there is no expert bowling coach attached there who could polish their skills. The PCB has recently denied Waqar Younis a long term coaching assignments. Former Test cricketer Wasim Akram though showed his interest in a coaching assignment, but never approached the PCB seriously for the job and is too committed with his commentary assignments.

The PCB has therefore been considering the option of sending the bowlers to Lillee for the much needed guidance, coaching and help.

Those who are in the running to get training and coaching abroad included Mohammad Asif, Najaf Shah, Mohammad Irshad, Mohammad Khalil and Wahab Riaz.

What do you make of this chaps? Why can’t the PCB make use of the so called National Cricket Academy rather then sending the players to India?

And the potential players which are likely to be sent especially Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Khalil. From what I have seen of them they are not international standards. I am sure there are better deserving bowlers in Pakistan then them.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Thats a sad news for Pakistan. Its a shame for us having 2Ws unemployed in the country and looking elsewhere.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Why is it a shame? Not all great sportsmen can be great coaches. Wasim has said on numerous occassions that he does not have the patience to be a coach. Waqar, has however, volunteered but if he was really serious about it he would have opened an academy.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

I don’t know how true is this fact about wasim that he can’t be a great coach.
I agree with smoothguy 100%, it is a shame. No one from PCB has ever approached wasim akram seriuosly. And we also know what happened with waqar younis. Stupid PCB only wanted a short term contract. We are ever ready to admit and blame that akram unofficially trained indian pacers, but when it comes to making him or waqar a bowling coach PCB as asusual always has acted like assclowns. We have the biggest asset in the form of 2 W’s to train the fast bowlers but i guess PCB ego is bigger than the national interest.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

I’m disappointed, why couldn’t they offer Waqar a long term contract? We have seen Rana benefitting from Waqar when he gave tips in Australia. Now sending our pacers to India :nook:, apni izzat pe laat maar dee. Also the choice of bowlers: Asif, Khalil, Najaf Shah… they are more like medium pacers, not fasties like Irshad, Yasir Ali. They should also send (if they are really sending) Riaz Afridi and Junaid Zia, they are better prospects I believe.

BY WAHEED KHAN
KARACHI: The ad-hoc committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has given approval for having extensive and specialised training camps for fast bowlers and opening batsmen and former Test captains Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis will be asked to help out the invited pace bowlers.
Sources in the board said that the board as part of its strategy to develop the existing pool of pace bowlers had already decided to send three bowlers to the MRF pace academy in Chennai.

“But apart from sending bowlers to the MRF academy the Chairman has also got approval for setting up of a camp for pace bowlers during the summer,” one source said. “And the idea is to invite Wasim and Waqar to attend these camps and help out the bowlers,” the source added.

Wasim and Waqar who formed the best opening attack for Pakistan ended their careers in 2003 with nearly 800 Test and over 800 one-day wickets.

Both have complained that the board was not willing to use their experience in coaching assignments after talks between Waqar and the board to sign him on as bowling coach before the Indian tour failed.

The source said other leading former pace bowlers would be invited to help out the boys in the camp. "There is also approval for having a extensive camp for opening batsmen in the summer and before England comes to Pakistan in October.

“The reason why the board has decided to award special monthly stipends to the second line players is to ensure most of them are not forced by monetary considerations to go in the summer and play league cricket,” he added.

He explained that the board wanted the leading performers of the domestic season available for these two camps which would also be supervised by national coach Bob Woolmer.

“The schedule of these camps would be decided after the board has final discussions with Woolmer and the national selectors,” the source stated.

Woolmer is currently in England to attend the wedding of the Pakistan team trainer Murray Stevenson and also to be with pacer Shabbir Ahmed as he undergoes tests in Chester on his suspect bowling action.

“Woolmer will come to Pakistan with the report on Shabbir’s action after which the schedule of these specialised camps would be sorted out,” the source said.

He said already the board was faced with a problem as Najaf Shah who was to be sent to the MRF academy had left for England to play in league cricket. Beside Najaf, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Irshad were the two other bowlers shortlisted for the Chennai academy.

“But now the board is looking for a replacement for Najaf Shah as its reserve choice Yasir Arafat is also playing for Scotland.”

The board has now also decided that the bowlers would be sent to the MRF pace academy only for the duration of time that former Australian fast bowling legend Dennis Lillie is in Chennai to work at the academy.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Does that mean PCB now wants more Wasims and Waqars to replresent Pakistan in future rather than Srinaths and Prasads? What a shame! Our upcoming fasties could’ve learnt a thing or two from Srinath & Prasad.

Inzamam not in favour of sending bowlers to India

Inzamam-ul-Haq has opposed the decision of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to send fast bowlers to the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai for training and acquiring skills from Dennis Lillee, the former Australian fast bowler. The PCB had decided to send three young bowlers - Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Irshad and Najaf Shah - to train at the academy.

“Pakistan has produced fast bowlers of the highest quality as compared to any other country,” Inzamam told The News, “and Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were the best choice to give training to these bowlers.”

Inzamam added that in his entire international career he had not seen any better fast bowlers than Wasim and Waqar, who managed to capture 787 wickets between them in Tests, and suggested that it would be better if bowlers from other countries got specialised training in Pakistan’s own academy.

Inzamam also urged the board to take adequate measures to keep suspect bowling actions under check at the domestic level. Recently Shoaib Malik and Shabbir Ahmed, were reported for having an illegal bowling action. “Thank God Shoaib Malik cleared himself from this allegation but still Shabbir Ahmed is under the threat, but this is a serious problem and should be checked at domestic level.”

Speaking about the central contracts, which were recently renewed by the board for 17 players, Inzamam said, “The inclusion of more players in the central-contract pool will push the players to keep themselves in practice and match-fit.”

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Well, let’s carry on the debate in its true perspective. No doubt, these players are being sent to India but one of the main reasons for this strategic decision is to provide these bowlers an opportunity to be trained under legendary Dennis Lillie. However, they will also be trained by some local Indian coaches to improve the basics and I guess that is where our national ego hurts and rightly so. However, a valid question is as to why Waqar Younis has not been hired by PCB? But in any case, if we have to swallow the bitter pill of seeing our bowlers being trained on Indian soil, lets make sure we all know that they are there not for Potato or Vegetable Coaches but for the real Man namely Dennis Lillie……

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Yeah PD u are rithe on the mark. Lillee is a sharp guy.
I dont know if the 2 w's will be good coaches, but I bet you Rana Navid will be a great bowling coach some day. He just seems like that kind of a guy.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Actually the Indians should be the ones concerned about Pakistan bowlers in India. Hopefully they charge a premium from these guys.

On the other hand there is some benefit - when they're in India, we can implant the chip with the prime directive 'WHEN BOWLING TO INDIA STRAY OUTSIDE THE LEG STUMP AND PITCH IT UP"

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Inzimam said exactly what I expressed a week ago. Other nations should be sending their players to Pakistan to learn the great art of genuine fast bowling.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Inzi is 100% right on this. In my opinion even if Lillee is going to train our bowlers still we should not send our bowlers to get trained either in India or in Australia or England. They can surely go there to play quality cricket but not for specialised training. Pakistan has produced legendary fast bowlers and PCB should be looking forward to hiring the two W's instead of begging other nations to train our bowlers. Freakin nut head PCB.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Pakistan has great hockey players therefore why invite foreign coaches just as in cricket. Reason is easy, just like any other professional field (medicine, engineering, business studies) Pakistanis still hv to travel abroad for enhanced knowhow.

Inzi is an idiot when it comes to making intellectual or more than tomorrow discussions. Lillee is one of the greates bowlers of all times, no discredit to Waqar/Wasim but Lillee has seen much more cricket and coached cricketers for the last 10years. MRF Bowlers academy has established itself as a centre of excellence and players from India and abroad (Brett Lee) are proof of its track record.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

I agree with this decision. Lillee has a scientific training facility available and our bowlers can benefit from it. Even if it was in timbaktoo, i would have agreed with this decision. Lillee can actually see his academy fulfilling some of its potential with some 'genuine' talent gracing it ;-)

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

Why can't we establish our own "scientific training" academy?

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

^^ :k:

Since we don’t have a facility as offered by Lillee so it is good to send our fast bowlers somewhere they can find better facilities and assistance. Wasim and Waqar may be much better bowlers when put against Lillee, but when it comes to coaching they don’t have enough training or experience for it. Coaching is a tough job even for professionals. It was much better, however, if PCB has invested in these players to educate them as coaches and also in our own academy.

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

I have nothing against training Pakistani bowlers in India...I just hope Pakistani fans will remember the friendly gesture

Re: Pace Bowlers to be sent to Indian Academy

abay chup kar…tum hamay fast bowling karan sikhao gay? Potato coach madan lal and roger bunny will teach us how to bowl fast?..hey bhagwan, mughay uppar bula lay…Bhangiee trying to become a pilot…we are sending our fast bowlers there for Lillie…
