is it? pls if anyone knows hadith pls state:confused:
Before the advent of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him), it was a tradition in the Arabs that the rich people used to wear their cloaks with flowing clothes which used to drag along the ground (like the one you'll see in present days Queens and princes in Europe). At that time it was the sign of wealth and high status. Holy Prophet discourages this practice as according to Islam the only way of judge the status of one person is through 'Taqwah'.
I believe that practice in a lot of present day muslims to have paenchays above the ankles comes from that.
Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 72, Number 683:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever drags his clothes (on the ground) out of pride and arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection."
I can share what I know, other than that Allah knows best. To the best of my knowledge, yes, it is wrong if done out of pride and arrogance, but it is still wrong if it is NOT done out of pride and arrogance.
Abu Saâeed al-Khudri said: âThe Messenger of Allaah :saw: said: âThe lower garment of the Muslim should come down to mid-calf, but there is nothing wrong if it is between that point and the ankles. Whatever is lower than the ankles is in the Fire. Whoever trails his garment on the ground out of pride, Allaah will not look at him.â
(Reported by Abu Dawud, no. 4093, with a saheeh isnaad.)
Notice there are TWO punishments which are mentioned.
- Whatever is lower than the ankles is in the Fire.
- Whoever trails his garment on the ground out of pride, Allaah will not look at him.
So even if it is done without pride, it is considered a sin.
Prophet :saw: said: âWhatever of the izaar (lower garment) hangs down below the ankles is in the Fire.â (Bukhari, 5787)
(do you see any mention of pride here??)
The Prophet :saw: said: âThere are three whom Allaah will not look at or praise on the Day of Judgement and theirs will be a painful punishment: the one who wears his garment below his ankles, the one who reminds others of his favours, and the one who sells his product by means of making false oathsâ (Muslim, no. 106)
(no mention of pride again)
There are a few ahadith, you can read them and draw your own conclusions.
Ibn âAbbaas reported that the Prophet :saw: said: âAllaah will not look at the one who wears his lower garment below his ankles.â
(Reported by al-Nisaaâi in al-Mujtabaa, Kitaab al-Zeenah, Baab Isbaal al-Izaar)
Hudhayfah said: âThe Messenger of Allaah :saw: took hold of the muscle of my calf (or his calf) and said, âThis is where the izaar should stop; if you insist, it may be lower, but it should not reach the ankles.ââ
(Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth; see Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 1783
and Allah knows best.
do those who preach it practice it too?? is everyone who believes in the above wearing culottes?
i, personally, think it is not compulsary for ppl these days to keep their dress above the ankles....
it is no longer a symbol of pride....
but to look at it in this way that long dress might come under ur feet and get dirty, better keep it up....
although those mullahs who keep their lower legs naked, as if wearing shorts, i'd ban them to come out on streets if i were in charge....
jazakullah for hadithsâŚ
if it is unacceptable to have penchay touching ankles..then âŚ
@ brosâŚive hardly seen this practised..
i read a hadith that stated if u come to the mosque dont raise the penchay if u didnt have them up already (itd be hypocrisy?)⌠so it may have been a due to anti kuffar customs that this way of dress was ordained but for whatever reason, u arent supposed to be a hypocrite around it eitherâŚwhich brings me to sayâŚif so many bros are at the sisters cases for duppatta/hijab, makeup, etcâŚthen what about this factor?
