Do you guys miss those small paan shops from back home. Even if you are not a paan muncher, its kind of hard not have a favorite paan shop.
back in Karachi, ours was the one that is next to Disco Bakery in block 3 of Gulshan Iqbal. The most amazing part was how fast these guys put together a pan and then they ask if you want to eat it here or have it wrapped. If you tell him that you want to eat now, he would insist that he put the paan in your mouth himself and then he will wipe the access kaththa of his finger with his hair.
I hear katha is really good for hair. Ever noticed how thick the paan wala's hair is?
My fave paan shop was around our boarding school and the only reason we ever went there was because their was a fantastic dhaba next to eat where we got the best parathas and cold coffee and chai. The dude's little son used to sit with him at the shop and I especially like looking at the brass containers that carried all the gulukands and suparis.
They have those kind of paan shops in Chicago on Devon which stay open 24x7, and play desi ganay in very loud sound.
Mine was Jamaal Paan house on Super highway near water pump in Karachi. It was very bright , clean and nicely maintained.
They made a good name in no time. People used to come from far off places to enjoy their paan.

for some reason, I never liked the famous PIDC paan. I wonder if its still there after that bomb blast
:D I have seen that thook art on Devon street in Chicago. During winter when there is white ice on the sidewalks and street that thook art looks so beautiful and disgusting. :D
Ever wondered why so many ppl used to stand around the pan shop for long time, discussing every possible topic of the world and evaluating every person of mohalla.. I never liked to stay extra at Pan wala but yes whenever I stood, I alwayz found them talking about something in a very funny manner that looked like a umer sharif stage drama.
And that also reminds me that an indian fast bowler came and played for long time, Srinath. We always used to say "Pan wala bowling kara raha hai" cuz his face resembles to 99% of Panwalas except that he was tall and most panwalas are short, may be cuz most of them are bengalis...

I'm not addicted to paan, and never eat the one with tobacco, but yes meetha paan a lot of times. my favorite pan shop is the one at Muhammad Ali Society, opposite Kaybees, his paans are full of coconut and other sweet stuff
