I have been going to London a LOT past couple of months and in the coming month as well, I have a 16-25 Railcard as well, how do I get a discount on my Oyster for everyday travel? The lady at the counter had no clue, and the website’s annoyingly unhelpful.
Thanks in advance for any help, and yes Iam trying to save money everywhere so anything other than filling my tid I am a very kanjoos insaan nowadays.
You can’t get the actual student oyster card. These are only for registered students of certain universities (who will require travel within London) and are not dependent on age, rather registration as a student on a course where you study over a certain no of hrs per week. You have to apply for one online, giving them all your student details which they will check with student records of your university before sending out your card. Student oyster allows you to buy discounted weekly, monthly etc travelcards.
However, you don’t get the discount on daily travel cards that you would get with the 16-25 railcard. With the 16-25 railcard, you only get discounts on off-peak single fares and on the off-peak daily travelcard.
So the way you need to do it, is get your 16-25 railcard applied to your Oyster. First you need an oyster card that is registered to you, then go to a LU ticket office with both railcard and oyster card and ask them to apply it.

If you buy a 16-25 Railcard, you can set the discount entitlement on a standard adult Oyster card, an 18+ Student Oyster photocard or a 16+ Oyster photocard to get 34 per cent discount on:
Off-peak pay as you go single fares for journeys on Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services in London
The off-peak daily price cap for journeys on Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services in London
You can also buy discounted Off-Peak Day Travelcards at anytime on weekends, Public Holidays and after 10:00, Monday to Friday. During July and August, Off-Peak Day Travelcards are available after 09:30.
If you have a 16+ Oyster photocard and a 16-24 Railcard discount, you will get the better value discount according to the journey you are making. National Rail | Transport for London

9. Can I use my Railcard for tickets for travel on the London Underground?
With your Railcard you can get 1/3 off a London Zones 1-6 Off-Peak Day Travelcard (subject to a minimum fare of £5.30) and an Anytime Day Travelcard when bought as part of your journey to London from outside London Zones 1-9 (subject to a minimum fare of £15.00).
With an Oyster card, you can get your Railcard discount loaded onto your Oyster card to save 1/3 on single pay as you go fares on London Underground and Docklands Light Railway services in London. Simply take your Oyster card and valid Railcard to a London Underground station ticket office.
