So is it halal to own a chain of tim hortons or starbucks or any such thing ?
Re: owning a chain
noo answers .... not even one ??? ... i only asked becuase they have sausage and bacon in their breakfast menu
Re: owning a chain
I think if we can avoid it then its better. When something is haram in Islam, consuming, selling, buying, manufacturing - in fact there are 7 aspects of each haram product - and involving in any of those aspect is haram.
Re: owning a chain
Someone i know owns this chain and it never crossed his mind and they just bought it up yesterday and lets see how it goes
Re: owning a chain
I am no aalim but what he can do is carefully calculate all the profit he makes by selling bacon and stuff and donate it to local masjid without any niyat of sawab. That is what I heard for interest that people get on their saving accounts so it should be the same in this case.
Plus because the main business is to sell coffee and donuts, i doubt if whole business is haram, only that small part of it may be
Re: owning a chain
Hhmmm ... thats an interesting take on it ... yeah i'll tell him that and also to consult an aalim on it
Re: owning a chain
that reminds me i want to own chains of businesses..
lol

I think that this is stretching the bounds of permissibility. What you stated is what scholars recommend for disposing of interest income, such as when it is impossible to securely store your money in a bank without receiving contaminated interest.
Owning a business that deals in the haraam is different. You do have a choice in what manner of franchise to buy, what manner of business to run.

You maybe right. I was just wondering that if just a small portion of that business is haram, does that make the whole business haraam!

i think once you gave an example, i dont remember the real case, but example was like this "If small amount of piss is mixed in a water tank, the whole tank becomes haram/nijis"

hahaha, I do remember giving that example and when I was writing my reply that you quoted, I was thinking of the same example. Touche'. You and Mad_sci are right.
Re: owning a chain

Re: owning a chain

Just for the record though robbery is Haram. ![]()
Re: owning a chain
When one can own Popeye's or KFC halal franchise, why go for something that will force you to have haram things on menu.
Its like, you can start your own convenience store so you can chose not to sell lottery or vulgur magzines, where as if you open a MAC's or other C.Stores then you can't opt out for these items.
Life is short and grave is getting close everyday, we are not dieing of hunger (as described in Fiqah in certain situations you can eat dead horse meat after several days of faqa in a desert etc etc). So there are business which one can look for, might have less profit, might require more efforts, might force you to relocate for the location etc, but at the end of the day when you put bread on the table infront of your family, you will be 100% sure that its halal (your best shot in capitalism based economy).
