My parents are flying from heathrow to lahore with PIA. Does anyone know if heathrow have a checked in baggage size restriction. The airline itself said it does not for size but has for weight, 32kg. But I’m not sure the member of staff that I spoke to knew for sure.
They have packed some of their stuff in a large box as it is mainly presents n didn’t want to carry n empty suitcase on return journey.
So any help on size restriction would be great as don’t want to be loaded with charges at the airport. Tried calling the airport but got nowhere with automated line.
maximum total allowable checked in baggage size has a dimension restriction by ALL airlines. that dimensions is 158 cms [length + width + height]. an average large sized suitcase of that dimension looks as follows:
PIA representative was PARTIALLY right. oversize bags are NOT a problem to check in [within 23 kg and up to 32 kg with an additional fee] but not at the check-in counter. you have to take your bag to a special counter marked “OVER-SIZED BAGGAGE HANDLING” which is usually located close to the check-in counters. just look for the sign.
CAUTION:
please do NOT use cardboard boxes to pack your gifts because the cardboard box rips apart if socked in rain unless it’s professionally wrapped at the airport “BAGGAGE WRAPPING SERVICES” counter…they do it for you and charge you like $5. your box will be completely wrapped with several layers of plastic thus making it water-proofed.
i learned it the hard way once when the contents of my box arrived at destination in a plastic container with several items missing.
It is already wrapped in plastic so not worried about that.
KKF, where did u get these dimensions from?
Any idea of oversize baggage charges ?
oh good, don't worry about packing then! :) the airlines' baggage dimension restrictions are mentioned on all of their websites under 'Free Baggage Allowance" ... you scroll further down and you will see the dimensions for maximum baggage sizes.
there is no charge if their weight is under the weight restrictions...with most airlines, to and from US/Canada, it's 23 kg for each of the two bags. these bags can weigh up to a maximum of 32 kg for an additional fee of $50. anything above 32 kg and/or over sized, you have to pay extra/kg charges and book through the "oversize baggage handling".
the charges for extra baggage to and from the US is around $200
