overnight in JFK

Ok so, we have a flight arriving from Spain at JFK airport at 7pm and our flight out of NY to get home is the next morning at 9am. The two flights are booked on separate tickets, different airlines, so Im assuming we will have to collect our baggage after the first flight and have it rechecked for the second, right. I dont know how long customs, baggage collection etc will take, but lets say 2 hrs so we are done by 9pm. That gives us a 12hr wait till our next flight :bummer:. Does anyone know of any cheap hotels near JFK where we can spend the night? Someone told us we could just stay in the airport overnight, but I dont know how this would work, as we would get out of arrivals when we collect our luggage and then have to go to departures, but probably would not be able to get to the terminals as it would be too early to check-in our baggage? Any information would be appreciated as Im not familiar with JFK airport
Thanks!

Re: overnight in JFK

  1. Yes, you have to collect and recheck your baggage and this would be true even if your domestic flight was booked in the same itinerary. You have to collect your baggage for customs as JFK is you port of entry.

  2. I think you can check your luggage in earlier. JFK is open 24 hours so your local airline should take your luggage.

You can stay at terminal overnight. I doubt if you can find a cheap hotel near JFK as this is NYC we are talking about. You maybe able to find something in NJ area and a hotel shuttle to take you there and drop you back.

FYI, staying overnight at the airport is not as bad as you think. I've done that and its ok. more like a camping. Plus you will have a lots of company. There are people who are stuck at JFK for days because of the Europe flights cancellations due to that volcanic dust over the continent.

Thanks TLK

I found another flight out of JFK for 9pm that same night. From Spain to NY, we are on Iberia, and from NY onwards with Delta. I called Delta and they said they have a baggage agreement with Iberia, so when we check-in, we can have our baggage booked through to our final destination. I am a bit nervous about the timing, as our landing in JFK is at 7:10pm and then the Delta departure at 9pm. The Delta lady said the minimum time required between flights is 75 minutes. Does it seem ok or are the flights too close by. It will be such a huge relief to get back home that night, instead of having to wait the extra day

Re: overnight in JFK

That timings look ok considering that you dont need to be physically there 75 minutes ago. Is that the last flight out of JFK to your home city, that night? If not then Delta will try to accommodate you to the next flight, in case you miss it (God forbid). They are pretty good in accommodating people.

Re: overnight in JFK

There are many cheap hotels near JFK, you can find them for an overnight stay from 70-150$. I stayed there many times. Holiday Inn Express and another one just next to it.
you can use expedia or kayak to find a hotel. Usually they are affordable near the itself with free shuttles as well.

I would be lil worried with the time span you are mentioning, cause of the ASH delays and Runway construction, there is a high chance that you would be delayed in arriving and then immigration and all stuff.

Thanks

Actually our trip isnt until July, so I hope all the volcano ash problems will be over with by then

I have called Delta Airlines 3 times and spoke with 3 different agents and they all said it is enough time. But then I called JFK airport and they said they advise against it. I am leaning towards taking the chance for it, but Im just worried if we miss the 9pm flight and get put on standby..what if the 9am flight the next morning is full

Also, our Iberia flight will land in terminal 7 and our Delta flight will depart from terminal 3. Will it be faster to recheck our bags in T7 after we clear customs, or to take them with us to T3 to check them there

I have found some hotels close to the airport for about $100/night with free shuttle service to JFK, in case we decide to go for the morning flight

Ya Ive heard about that...there are even websites dedicated to sleeping in airports! But what do you do, bring a sleeping bag? Or spend the night on a bench/on the floor?

I spent the night on a bench, but a light blanket and a small pillow will help.

Agree with everything.

I always try to get a break in flight outside of US, because they always check your luggage straight to JFK, once had to break the flight in Miami and it was such a hassle.

It will be easier to take them to terminal 3 and check them there, less chances of losing your stuff. You can take the air train to go from terminal 7 to 3 so don't worry about lugging it all the way.

My personal opinion would be against staying in a hotel, its a whole lot of trouble trying to get the shuttle to the hotel, sleeping, showering and trying to get back to the airport. Would be a lot easier, although a bit uncomfortable to stay at the airport.

I wouldn't take the risk, changing terminal adds extra time, and you never know about any immigration delay. Some times the passengers are out within an hour, and some times it takes upto two hours. and remember, you would need to go through security again to board your next flight. Evening time is a pretty bz time at the airport.

hmm, it depends- what passport you have? How much do you travel and stuff? If you're US citizen and travel pretty regularly, they'll see it and there won't be a lot of custom, immigration stuff and you might be able to make it. It's doable in 2 hours but risky.

btw, if you ask they usually tell you how full the 9 am flight is, worth a try?!

No we’re not US citizens, we’re Canadian. Our flight from JFK is to Burlington and from there we will drive home to Canada. We do travel regularly, but have always avoided travel through the States and this is the first time in years and years that we are passing through

I asked on http://www.jfk-airport.net/ and they replied:

I also asked on the FlyerTalk forums and got these two responses:

Well after much thought, we have gone ahead and booked our tickets for the 9pm flight. Insha Allah everything will go smoothly for us and we wont miss the flight!!!

Re: overnight in JFK
