PESHAWAR, April 18: Overburdened with cancer patients, the Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (Irnum) awaits government assistance to buy new equipment and improve its healthcare facilities.

Health experts say that curable types of cancer have become incurable as people have to wait for weeks for their appointment at Irnum owing to high number of patients visiting the institute.

Majority of poor people, who cant afford to go to private hospitals come here for treatment of cancer thats why there is so much burden on the institute, said Irnum Executive Director Dr Safoora.During a visit to the institute, situated on University Road right in front of Khyber Teaching Hospital, it was noticed that a large number of patients with different types of cancer had come from far-flung areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fata and Afghanistan.

Medical experts, working at the institute, said that they needed more machines and human resources to improve the quality of treatment and reduce the duration of treatment. It will also help us overcome the burden of patients, they added.

Dr Safoora said that the number of patients, who came for radiotherapy, was around 6,000 per year whereas more than 12,000 patients annuallyavailed nuclear medicine and diagnostic facilities at the institute.

According to international standard, a radiation machines can be used for about 500 patients only but in Irnum a machine is usually used for radiotherapy of around 1,800 patients because there are only three such machines at the institute.

Similarly, an oncologist can check and treat only 250 patients a year but in Irnum there are only eight oncologists so they have to take care of a higher number of patients.

New machines are needed as the treatment mode is changing with modern research in this field. Human resources are also needed, looking at the number of patients, who come fortreatment hem, said health experts, who wished not to be named.

They said that patients wouldnt have to wait for long if more modern machines and human resources were available at the institute. It will help those patients, who are suffering from the first or second stage of the ailment, to recover speedily,` they added.

One of the main reasons that many patients come to Irnum for radiotherapy or diagnosis is because charges at the institute are affordable as it is supported by Zakat Fund, Baitul Maal and some philanthropists.

However, Dr Safoora said that the number of poor patients was high and the funds exhausted within months.

Mom financial assistance from the government was needed as the institute was shouldering burden of patients from the province as well as tribal areas, she added. One patient can get Rs4,000 only from charity funds that is not enough for the treatment of a disease like cancer.

Owing to limited financial resources, the institute can`t provide CT Scan and MRI diagnostic facilities to patients. The number of wards for patients is also limited.

The institute, working since 1970s, is looking for approval of Rs500 million funds, which could help it to buy new equipment and expand its health facilities. However, so far it has been waiting for government support in this regard.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

^ is there any responsibility of the government, or every thing now will be done by private individuals?

As far as this ‘charity’ hospital is concerned, it belongs to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

And by doing something for this hospital will he prove his dedication to you?
I don't think so......

Instead of pointing the finger to IK....why not put pressure on the current government to provide the necessary tools to treat its needy public?

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

It is the first big source of charity money after ending UK businesses ,
Earth quake and floods came later .
One should be careful about his main ...............

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

^ dont worry about his 'charity' as people give to him on their free will, you should worry about the dacoities of your leaders who do that against the wishes of the people.

As far as the present topic is concerned its fully federal government concern.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

What this hospital has anything to do with IK? Honestly Sachaydino, I used to take you as a serious poster whose differences are based on facts and ideology, but you turned out to be the same old school ranter whose against people and parties just for the heck of it.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

Finally you call upon the man for help you hate the most.
While you see the agony, you still don't know where to
divert your complaint? Running Irnum is the responsibility
of Imran Khan? It shows how biased and uninformed you are.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

a jiyala as a serious poster? i stopped tanking him seriously when he was doing qaseeda about the infallible nature of bhutta when his own pm admitted that nationalization was a mistake.

PS Zardari, gillani, khar have more money than imran individually let alone combined so why not they do it? forget donation, they should pay taxes on their assets and lot of the problems would be alleviated in pakistan.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

And then they complain that everything here is about PTI and IK.
Khudd hi kuch aur nazar nahin aata aur ilzaam humaray upar.......

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

I have policy issues with imran, but this just amounts to libel w/o proof.

agar ethics nahin pata to kam az kam khuda ka khauf karro.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

I agree with above posters, its really isnt IK's responsibilty, if he does something about it, very good, however, at the end of the day its the government job to ensure all the health care facilities to awaam and I think the biggest issue for low-income families is "affordability" and good quality health care, Also, there is lack of resources and shortage of good physicians in public health sector as well. Government needs to find solutions to all these problems. However, On the other hand, private health care is doing a pretty decent job.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

I always thought that provision of health, education, security and rule of law was government's responsibility. Guess, I'm wrong. Government has only the right to do corruption, responsibilities lie elsewhere.

Re: Overburdened cancer hospital needs new equipment, staff

When it is a PPP government, or a government from 'non-Punjab' then establishment, army, bureaucrats, outside force all unite together, they don't allow government to function, they force ministers to do corruption, to under-perform, to ignore responsibilities, to shove rental-power-plants upon the government.

Only if someone can give the idea of 'rental cancer equipment' to Zardari you will get them very next day ;)
