Over wearing contacts?

Is there such a thing as over wearing contact lenses?

There have been times when I put contacts on in the morning and don’t take them off till I’m about to go to sleep. I think the longest I might have had them on was for 17 hours or so. Lately, I’ve been wearing them for 12 hours or more. Also, I wear the monthly disposable contacts.

I was wondering if anyone’s aware of any negative side effects of it.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

when i first started wearing contacts i thought putting them in and takin em out were the hardest partttt!
so i would leave em in for like a week..and then finally take it out..yes..i would sleep with em..and take a shower with em..everything..but then my mom fnally found out..and she was like u gadhiiiiiii! but they didnt do any harm to my eyes however they would wear off quicky..
i think it only depends on U..if ur fine with em being in there for so long..then u shld be fine
i still wear my contacts from 6 in the morning to like 12-1 am...and i have no problems

Re: Over wearing contacts?

i keep my lenses in for weeks at a time

Re: Over wearing contacts?

can scratch your cornea if they're old and overworn - mainly because they get small cracks in them that you can't see.

Not worth it - get a pair of glasses, and wear your contacts only when you need to during the day. I switch to glasses in the evening when I get home.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

ewwwwww sara don't do that! give your cornea room to breath.

i think as long as you are taking them out at night, and not sleeping with them, and allowing your corner breathing room, it should be ok. though, to be honest, for me, they get really really annoying like 9, 10 hours later. i come home and wear my glasses. so much more comfortable.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

khumar but then my eye hurts and feels weird if i take them out :bummer:

Re: Over wearing contacts?

well it’s not good to have them in for long. like people say nothing happens, but hte cornea gets its blook supply every time you blink, so if the contact lens is covering it, it doesn’t get its oxygen. you wanna go blind :smilestar: kidding. wean your eye off it. get a hot pair of glasses

Re: Over wearing contacts?

It's true the eyes get tired after wearing them for 8-9+ hours. I still leave them on, which I suppose ain't the best idea. I'm wondering if rinsing them with the solution and putting them back on for the day would be of any use.

PCG, what exactly do you mean by scratching the cornea and what are the symptoms? Also, the reason I wear contacts for extended hours is because I'm nearsighted. Therefore, my eyes start to hurt if I read textbooks (or anything else) wearing glasses while using the computer (need it for the computer screen).

Re: Over wearing contacts?

rinsing with solution won't do anything. once you take the contacts out you have to keep them in the solution for atleast 4 hours. Do what I do, just get some good contact eye drops (visine or bausch and lombe are 2 good ones) and use them throughout the day when they begin to bug you.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

Eye drops is something I've been wanting to explore for a while! Thank you for bringing it up. My eyes get really stressed at times, especially when the contacts dry out, or for wearing them for too long, or when I'm stressed out myself. I tend to get headaches because of it.

Are there any particular type of drops that you've used, which seemed to have worked? I believe Visine and other brands have quite a lot of variety.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

I rather like the visine contact lense eyedrops. They don't tend to burn my eyes (odd word but that's waht i've noticed) and you can use them throughout the day. Visine does have a huge line of eye drops, but like I said, the contact lens ones are the one I use (it's like a tiny white and purple bottle). Bausche and Lomb, as far as i know, have to be used like prior to putting on the contact. At least that is what my friend who uses it told me.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

Thanks. I'll look for the particular eyedrops.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

I don't regularly post here anymore, but your post compelled me to sign in to tell you guys please don't do that to your eyes. I am so shocked to hear this from you people.
OK so may be there is a small number of people who can sleep in contact lenses, but I am sure it is none of you. Don't leave them in your eyes for days!! You can develop corneal ulcer! I was given a number of drops to take care of my eye allergies (which mashAllah se happened because of the contact lenses) I never left 'em in my eyes overnight, but even then I was at much higher risk because I wore contacts for long hours. Besides, you don't know what your eyes will come in contact with at all times. Anything can happen! you can be near fire without knowing or some sort of chemical (yeah, those household ones count too) Please protect your eyes or you will lose your eyesight COMPLETELY.

And yeah, don't tell me you do it because you have real good-reliable contact lenses! Whatever it is, I don't care! It can hurt your eyes if you don't properly take care of it.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

YOu guys won't believe this but I used to keep mine in my eyes for a couple of months at a time when finally I went for an eye exam and was told by the doc that I was a classic case to be at risk for developing eye cancer or ulcer (can't remember which one).

After that I got myself a pair of glasses and now occasionally use my contacts.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

I wish I could tell you more about cornea scratches, but can't give you much info at the moment. Research it, perhaps. I knew someone who mentioned once that their cornea got scratched. I don't know if its painful, actually, because I don't know if nerves reach out to the cornea. At least I don't know of any... but it does take a lot of time to heal, and from what I understand you either don't wear contacts ever again, or you have to stay away from them for a long time. Not an easy to heal process.

I remember my eye doctor got really freaked out when he saw I was wearing a torn contact lens. He got really mad - I was just trying to prolong their wear. He says I need to get rid of them every 2 weeks. But I manage to make it last like 3. 4 is pushing it.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

I normally wear them all day too....6am to 11pm mot often.
It also depends on eyes and cornea size and whatnot....my optician told me once that according to the shape/size of ones cornea, they recomend the time of contact usage. I dunno if it really is the case or not.

Re: Over wearing contacts?

I wear hard contact lenses as my cornea is mis-shaped (started wearing them regularly in Jan 2006) and I tend to wear them for like 16-17 hours a day.
I get really uncomfortable sensations in my eyes, and at times feels like my eyes are burning...literally I am at the optometrists about 3 times a month!
She told me to use "refresh Contacts" and "Thera Tears" to keep the eyes lubricated...and also, my cornea's are very scratched and scarred through not looking after my eyes over the past few years (wasn't wearning lenses).
I use BROLENE drops for the scratching which heals them very well....

anyway, just wanted to say that I neglected my eyes since 2000 and if I had taken care of them, I wouldn't be in this predicament...without my lenses I am virtually helpless...I can't do anything...drive, read, watch tv etc......your eyes are very precious...I realise that now.....PLEASE guys..look after your eyes and don't abuse them to try and save money/time......

Re: Over wearing contacts?

i know this is a bit off topic, but my mum had corneal scratching as well. and she has dry eyes. really irritated her. she said it felt like there was something in her eye constantly. in the end, she had to undergo surgery to fix it. i think she had to get the part removed. she then wore a contact to cover the eye for the longest time. and had to apply this gel to her eye. but now alhamdulilah after a few years she just has to rely on those artificial tears.

oh she hardly ever wore contacts. like a month over all. woh bhi shuro shuro main when they were the rage. (this is like ohh...14 years ago). again, due to her dry eyes she just could never wear them.
