We live in an apt with limited closet space. We have been using over the door hooks behind bathroom and bedroom doors but it just feels crowded and messy. Any solutions or tips you guys have?
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
is the issue with limited closet space or limited space overall?
if the closet space is limited, you can buy standalone wardrobes for extra space
if that is an issue, you can get underbed storage bins for out of season clothing or items that are not worn often.
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
I HATE HATE HATE clothes behind doors. As much as I hate them,I have them behind every door, thanks to limited closet space and limited overall space and no space under the beds anymore....
Sorry,I know I haven't been helpful but I so understand...:(
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
chips..time to purge :D
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
Same here. We have 2 closets, Jr. Clothes are in a dresser and underbed storage is being utilized for our suitcases which are already full with clothes :(
Chips I hate behind door clothes too and sad thing is that I don't even have floor space to have those nice coat racks.

Re: Over the door hanging clothes
these are widely used in japan right?
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
Kakee our out of season clothes are in space saver bags in our suitcases. We are currently hanging our sleeping clothes and clothes that are clean and can be worn again behind doors.

yah I guess?
my apartment although not as spacious as my old apartment in australia is more comfortable than a lot of others so I have room to hang my clothes.
and automne77
why not throw away/donate/sell the clothes you don't use anymore?
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
If one has limited space then one should have clothes to match the space. Purge and replenish frequently.
Donate extra to a local charity and get rewarded, others have given good advice , I wanted to give a different perspective to the issue.
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
Space is not an issue for us since we have more than enough closets but I still have one of those for my closet in the bedroom. I put clothes that are usually sitting on my bed (thanks to hubby).. on that when I don' have time to hang them. And then when I do get time I hang those clothes. So that thing is actually pretty handy when I am super busy but still want my room clean.
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
You don’t have to be a hoarder to actually run out of space…![]()
I have felt that after having a kid was when I thought I ran out of all space…there are boxes of diapers and wipes which go under the bed and boxes of outgrown clothes that have to be stored (and not everything can be donated),unlike adult clothes which you actually do not outgrow and can be given away after a few seasons.Only her snow suit and winter stuff takes up so much space.Living in apartments or smaller units might come with the issue of limited space.
Over the door hangers at my place are meant for night suits or as someone said clothes that can’t be necessarily put back on hangers or folded right away.As much as it looks untidy,it does help…!
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
I agree chips. I sort through every year for stuff to get rid of (not just clothes - paperwork and everything else). I hate accumulating things. But with the requirement for winter, summer and in-between wardrobes and on top do that western and desi-wear, one ends up with quite a lot of things. Then all the desi wear which is for special occasions which you will need again but not regularly. So all this ends up taking space in my cupboard and under the bed.
I have hooks behind the bedroom door and on the outside of the cupboard but these are basically for mine and hubby's clothes that we're wearing - sleep wear, stuff we've worn and will wear again that week before putting in the wash. I hate putting stuff like this in the cupboard because you build up a musty odour in it. In Pak it's a different story because my in-laws made the rooms with a changing room leading to the bathroom, so all the wardrobes are in there plus a wall with hooks for hanging wet towels and stuff. Small apartments and even most houses in the UK (except master bedrooms), don't have the luxury of that much space.
I can't think of anything you can do about it. I'm lucky that the cupboard is behind the bedroom door when it's open, so it's all concealed on one side. No one sees the mess unless they go fully into the room :p
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
Vacuum bags were my life savers when I was living in an apartment.
Mirch bhai, stoppit and chips have explained it really well. There are also desi maternity clothes that we save for the next baby, not to mention the heavy jackets and coats for all members of the family.
I avoid buying things until absolutely necessary just because I know I need to get a few things out before I get something new (so sad Abt not getting any new lawn clothes )
And the clothes behind the door are the sleepwear, the ghar par pehnnay waley kapray and the ones to wear if we r going out. Stuff that is not dirty enough to be washed nor clean enough to be in the closet.
Over the door hanging clothes
in our kids room, for them to easily reach their night clothes, we have glued 3M command strips with hooks, at lower height. It was for then to get in habit of changing the clothes themselves and hang the one they just took off.
Regular closet hanging or behind the bathroom doors hanging was not working for them because of height, and we were finding clothes all over the floor once they were done changing
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
command strips? why not just anchor it etc?
Re: Over the door hanging clothes
Command strips peel off easily withou t any damage to the surface
