Re: Outrageous: 9th grader muslim student arrested for bringing clock in school..
Brother SID, This is not just a Texas only thing. It's an American thing (as in the thing that all minorities have had to endure if you look at history). And by it being an American thing, I do not mean that all citizens of U.S.A. are that way, but the perceived mindset that several ethnic backgrounds have had to endure and overcome before being accepted to be a part of what it is to be an American. Maybe others had an easier time because of their geographical location on the map, or the skin color, or the branch of faith, but the fact remains.
Unfortunately, the history shows us as this being the norm. For instance, there was a time when the migrant Irish were harassed. Then Italians. Then the Jewish. What seems to matter when it's all said and done is what those communities did to ensure that their coming generations do not have to put up with this mindset. If you look at most of those migrated ethnic groups, we find them so fully integrated in the system that they are in fact what makes an American in definition. It has little to do with what they left behind of their identity, but a large part because of what they did in the time following early migration.
The way I personally see it, the key to becoming safe from this harassment first of all is for the community to voice their discontent in unity. Secondly, muslims as a whole, and migrants of countries where Islam is prevalent must do everything possible to educate themselves, become an active and functional part of their communities, and excel in all fields and place themselves in positions of influence so that they can be in a position to assert the right kind of positive presence to ensure not only survival from stereotypes (which still remain till this day), but to at least set in place a filter that keeps a buffer between violence and Islam. In doing so, every muslim would be doing dawah through actions.
Think of the perception we have today of all the groups of migrants from before whether it's by country or faith. They're all now interwoven into the American fabric, and because of that they are sheltered from blatant stereotyping by the system; although still prone to it by ignorant segments of the society.
Ahmed should keep churning out new creativity in spite of what the others say because even if he stopped using his creativity, unfortunately the perception will still remain may be even longer. Because Ahmed has a bright mind, he should use his gift of intellect to inspire others, become an inventor/scientist, and a name that bring about pride for muslims and non-muslims alike because of this creativity.
I understand that this treatment is unfair, but we being muslims should extremely adaptable to hardships considering where we come from, and to take lessons from history of Islam which was born in the center of animosity but the dedication of our predecessors not only survived the animosity and physical violence, but overcame it in such a brilliant manner that the foes themselves became muslim whom we label as radiAllahu anhum. Our history should be sufficient for us to get through any hardships of life because Allah is the best of supporters for the believers. Muslims do not have to leave behind their identity of where they come from, of any part of their faith, but use those positives to influence their communities so that people can see what it is all about to be a muslim. Lets not let controlled media be the spokesperson for muslims, lets ourselves become our own spokespeople who are capable of rebutting any ill-founded stereotypes stemming from wrong information or outright ignorance.
Excellent post. Wonderfully thought out.
There are two groups that still get shabby treatment - American Indians and African Americans. The institutionalized discrimination against both these groups is a burden America has to bear and overcome.
