Our thoughts

Do we get punished for our thoughts that we may have but not act upon or speak?

On a similar note, do we as Muslims, believe in something similar to karma? Karma belief is that what comes around goes around. For example, if you hurt someone and treat someone badly, the smae thing will happen to you or your loved ones, and if you commit good deeds and treat others with respect, good things will happen for you. Do we believe in something like that, and its called something else?

Re: Our thoughts

There's a lot on thought and intention in Islam but I don't know. I guess it's still better to just think it and not do it if it's that bad.

Karma exists in Islam. Every good deed will come back somehow and every bad deed will come back. It's either in this life, or the next.

Re: Our thoughts

A student once asked a scholar, "At times devil puts such uncontrollable bad thoughts in my mind about Allah (swt) that due to embarrassment & guilt I wish to be cut into pieces and burnt.

The scholar asked, " When you walk on a road and watch different types of cars pass by you. Which of them do you watch for a longer duration and which ones do you ignore ?"

The student replied, "I observe the beautiful clean cars and ignore the dirty dented ones."

The scholar smiled, "Do the same with thoughts"

We are not responsible for Uncontrollable bad thoughts but for the controllable ones. We are not punished because of controllable bad thoughts but they are forbidden because they lead to sins.

Re: Our thoughts

We Muslims don't believe in Karma. But of course, when the crop is cut, the good ones are also cut along with bad. In the life hereafter, the good and the bad would be separated.

The one I am going to share might be a weak hadith but I heard it from people who follow authentic sources. I am sharing it here because it makes sense to me. May Allah (Swt) forgive mistakes from my side.

When the Prophet (saw) went on Mairaaj, on the first sky he saw a layer. Some beautiful things were rising from the earth and when they hit that layer, they became even more beautiful and went back to earth. Some ugly things that rose from the earth in the same manner but when they hit that layer they became even more uglier and returned to earth.

When the Prophet (Saw) asked Hazrat Jibrail (a.s) about it, he replied that the things rising from earth are the deeds of people, and things returning to earth are the decisions of Allah (swt) regarding the person who has sent those deeds. The more beautiful the deeds sent towards Allah (Swt), the more beautiful the decisions Allah (Swt) sends back for him and vice versa.

But of course, Allah (swt) is the most merciful of all. He never makes bad decisions. So, whatever HE decides is still in our best interest. Whether we like it or not, whether it is a punishment to warn us or it is a reward to encourage us or it is something beyond our perception. We don't have the mental capabilities to understand the wisdom and blessings that come along those decisions.
