What makes ppl stick with their religions so strongly???
What human need does it fullfill , which is so strong that despite obvious illogic built in it , ppl cant get over this ancient(and now counterproductive) concept…
The most incomprehensible thing thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.-Einstein
I think it is that incomprehensibility, which forces us to search for something…ummm, i mean we want everything to be accounted for in a way. We don’t want loose ends..we want to feel content and secure i guess. Religion helps us find answers both within and without, i guess it fulfills our sense of being…it helps us find ourselves…it give us a sense of direction also.So we aren’t

Illogical..counterproductive? hmmm what do u mean by that exactly?..waiting for your answer so i can yak some more
Nova, I think most people “pretend” that they stick with their religion. Most offer prayers for wanting something in “return".
Monotheism is Imperialism in religions.
It doesn’t fulfill any needs, and there is no logic to it. It is all about the attitude my friend.
In a lot of cases it depends how people were brought up. I think that you will find that most strong believers have at least one parent is a strong believer. Of course this is not always the case. But, Pakistanis have a tradition of trying very hard to pass on faith to their kids. That's why there is a high level of religious belief among us.
Unfortunately, they often times pass on blind faith, and a reluctance to evaluate what they are believing in. People think that if that's what people in the past did, and they called it Islam, then it must be right. That way a lot of bad stuff ends up getting passed down, I think. Too bad that when faith is high, reason is often low.

So true…
‘If the blind lead the blind both shall fall into the ditch’…now who was it who said that
who has seen God ?? but what religion is without the concept of God or an ultimate source of all power?? (please don't say communism.. that is not a religion).
well .. the quraishee girl says rightly that religion actually helps us find ourselves and comprehend the uncomprehensible around us.. as for example...."where the heck we came from" "Oh so we evolved from certain organisms.. where did those came from"
and of course...
"ok I am doing it ... God will forgive me .. He is the most gracious"
And...
"I'd rather not do it... God does not like it"
and "well ,since I am getting heaven after death ... why should I die for all these little things of the world??.. life is too short for chasing dreams"
and .... life gets a lot easier with this... seing the bigger picture and believing in a higher plan!
world is a weired place.. religion explains it.
and NY... there are a lot many true believers only if you open your eyes. For many it might simply be attitude!! For others... religion is life!! there are people who feel God's presence around them as they go through their daily work and believe in miracles because miracles happen for only those who believe in them!! you are right... they do crave for "return" but this is all about being human!! We are created this way!! And Allah is ok with that because he likes people praying to him with a strong belief!! Why else do you think He has created heaven??? or you don't believe in that, hun???
zara.. people try to pass blind faith to their kids ,alright.the reality: faith is meant to be blind. there are certain places where reasoning only leads to confusions, we might say it is illogical .. but in reality a lot of people are better off with this blind faith!! it actually helps. But then I am with you on one point. We should have done ijtihaad upon a lot of matters like parda for women and halal -o-haraam etc. But we just never bothered.!
