Ok. I always am confused about the Folk Love Stories that we have in Pakistan such as Heer Raanjha etc etc. I haven’t read any of these but as far as I know, in almost all of these stories, the girls usually run away, guys do the same. All the stupid incidents etc etc.
This whole thing is quite opposite to our culture. I mean if it happens in reality, the family response maybe (or is) the same as it was in those stories.
Then how come, poeple love to listen to those stories in both poetry and prose form. How come they seem to be proud of those stories.
Isn’t it contradictory…
Re: Our Folk Stories
lailaa majnoon is a true story of ARABS.
Re: Our Folk Stories
yeah, but my question is:
why do we love those stories and are proud of them - while we as a nation hate it to happen in our families
Re: Our Folk Stories
Cool Breeze,
First thing that i want to clear is that folk stories don't belong to pakistan, they belong to cultures. And people like folk stories and folk music because it gives them true sense of there selves.
I can say that i'm pakistani, but what does this mean only that i live in pakistan or it was made some time ago, but all this is too shallow, to really feel myself i had to attend to my athenic self, like punjabi, sindhi, pashtun, balouch etc. Now in that ethnic self one can feel at home, one can feel real.
And folk is the part of one's self, it makes you real.
One doesn't like folk because, one likes that story to happen in his family, one likes it because one feels it. One feels the environment the people and how they felt and what was the whole scenario. And this interest and taste is something developed.
And still you don't like then do ask a question from yourself that where do you belong? To get an answer from yourself give sometime to yourslef because you might not know this...
Re: Our Folk Stories
Thanks Words.
What you're saying, makes sense upto some extent.
But Culture means our values, our traditions - If we can't see something happening to us, why do we agree with them in general?
Re: Our Folk Stories
^ I wonder bout that too.
Guess what, i asked an Afghan do u have these ghar sey bhagney waley Ishq stories and to my surprise he said, yes, actually plenty of them not just one or two.
And funny thing is that he told me ne of the stories and the two lovers happen to be studying Islam........?Taleban Lovers?........And they are both very good at learning Islam and then they fall in love with each other and the same Zaalim samaaj thing etc. But i was imagining a Mulla and Mullani in love.
Re: Our Folk Stories
I didn't exactly got what you mean from this, Please elaborate a bit.
Re: Our Folk Stories
nonoe of the girls run away in any of the stories like
Heer/ranjha
laila majnu
sohni mahiwal
they’s actually married off else ware:chai:
Re: Our Folk Stories
well, I mean, if we don't like something for ourselves then we shouldn't be proud of it if others do it.
Re: Our Folk Stories
i was just reading about the 4 love stories of Punjab (Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiba and Saasi Pannu), and Laila Majnun, and at the end of one of them, the summary I mean, the author who actually wrote one of them down said that these stories have hidden meanings to them. The travel that one lover does for the other, and rejecting the world for the love, is parallel to the hunt for God that a mortal man does. Waris Shah begins Heer Ranjha with Allah's praise.
These stories are usually very old. Laila Majnun for example has been travelling before the time of Islam. It's just that at a certain point in history, someone decides to write them down, as they know it. And over time, the characters take the identity of the people these stories are found in. Therefore you have mentions of someone belonging to this family, or someone found in the village near Chenab, etc. The basic themes for the stories on the other hand are part of the human story.

Not true for atleast stories of Sassi PanhooN and Noori, Jaam Tamaachi as far as I know...
I have visited the museum near Haleji canal, Sind where the remanents of Sassi PanhooN's village is and that story is considered hostorically correct... Similarly, Noori, Jaam Tamaachi's story is true and you can find historical research and their graves (if I remember correctly for the grave part) in Sakhar, Sind...
Re: Our Folk Stories
I'm not asking if the stories are correct. Or if the content is Islamic
What I always find that people in PK hate it if their daughters or sons do something like that but on the other hand, they are proud of these historical stories - WHY?
Re: Our Folk Stories
^ I get your question and i have always wondered the same thing. If they did something wrong then why r they considered examples of true love?
Re: Our Folk Stories
is sohni majnoo real too?
Re: Our Folk Stories
sohni majnoo nahi sohni mahiwaal and written by a famous poet its punjabi one.I don't remember his name right now but i will tell u soon
Re: Our Folk Stories
Actually, From the perspective you are approaching isn’t artistic, We don’t agree or dis-agree with art. If an art can achieve your attention either in love or hate then its a good art. If an art can’t catch your attention then it isn’t worthy for you, but obviously you had develop a taste for it as well.
Now about those folk stories their beauty lies in the detail, when you see the detial, then you will feel the environment, you feel the characters, and everything. Further if you look from the eye of a Father and only concentrate on the outcome, not the characters and environment then obviously it won’t have much interest in it you.
One can provide alot of such examples, where we don’t agree with outcome but we like the whole thing. We like characters, And its very difficult to figure out why we like a specific character or a specific piece of art. I remember a hollywood movie with the name “The Pianist”, made on a jew pianist, in second world war. Whole movie is full of sufferings, brutality and misery. I liked the character of pianist very much i don’t totally agree with the climax as well. And i don’t like the killings that happened in the movie, yet i like the movie so much that i watched it many times.
**In short i think, we like them because they are ours. **
Re: Our Folk Stories
sohni mahiwal is a true story too
Re: Our Folk Stories
if you could give me a little more detail about were this sindh is i would also like to visit there:blush:
Re: Our Folk Stories
Thanks Words.
Although I still have my reservations on some forms of art/culture and reality.
But your example about The Pianist makes sense. It is actually answering my question up to some extent.
I didn't think of it this way :)
Thanks again.
