any other suggestions for kids calling their grandma other than Nani?
Also for Khala?
My son calls my mother "Nanna". He started it by himself and we never changed it... it's cute, and special for him and my mom.
Khala... idk. There's really only khala. =/

I have seen kids call their naanis Ammi esp if they call their moms something else. Some people call their Khalas aunty, aapi or aani

My daughter calls her nani 'Nana'.She started it,we never fixed it.We like it.
She started calling her khalas 'lala',when she was younger...she still calls them 'big lala' and 'chotu lala'.

My nieces and nephew call me Hala.
For grandmother its really nanna, nani, nani ammi, nano, nani jaan, etc.

I called both my maternal and paternal grandmothers "bari ammi."

My cousin didn't want her nephew and nieces to call her khala and she didn't like aunti either. So they call her "aani"...and I think it's cute.

For khala - in my family we use - aani, anni and kaka
We all used to call our grandmothers - ammi, amma

I think nanno is nice. My sisters kids call my mum mummy cause they heard us and now mine say the same. My mum always asks them to say naano but they say no u r mummy.
When they were younger they called me Kha now it's Khala. I think maasi is nice too. But I just adore the sound of when I hear them saying Khala.
Others I have heard are badi ammi, big ammi, naani ma, big mum, naani.

Why do you need an alternative?
Use what has been tradition for centuries. Why mess with it? Please don't start some stupid trend with these relationships/names like you see today with some of the names people give to their kids. Next thing you know, your kids are calling their nani/nano "kani/kano," we don't need that. Keep it simple.

My daughter started calling my mom ‘Nina’ so thats what Ammi has become :hehe:

totally agree with this!
my kids call em nani and nana... dadi and dada. when midget was younger, it was dadda for his dadi. but he sorted himself out.
if a kid naturally calls em something, then thats ok ... but coming up with names like we do with childrens names these days. eg xyshaan.. kinda looney
