GS has changed several times in its existence, the look and feel, the features/functions.
some thread had images of GS over the years, may have to dig it up for people to see.
In the end, the members make a community site, the usability, mods/admins/approach, and functions/features aid in making the site a place where someone wants to stay and participate. We have an excellent user base, which has changed in its make up over the years but that and the mod team makes the place what it is.
Since you are an insider, I would give some suggestions about GS.
The blocks on right hand side never make any sense to me, the links could be a little descriptive.
Don't list private blogs links on main page of site. Most of the time you click on blog links on main page, it gives you the access denied message.
More number of blog links like 20 or 30 could be added on the right side bar of all forums.

Me? Insider? sigh I dont do any of this
The quickie bar on the side is to quickly jump to different sections and most regular users learn what it is quickly, expanded descriptions would be hard to squeeze in the space provide but potentially we can do a mouseover thingie there. we even had a floating bar earlier but users did not like it and wanted what you see now
as far as blog links, i think its some system limitations, otherwise something as basic as that would not be left hanging.
But yeah I will pass the message on to the folks who are responsible for design and development and ask them to look into this stuff. Mucho gracias
