Had the Academy given this award to Depp, it would have lost credibility, like it did when Tomei got the award. It would be no different from the MTV movie awards then

Depp's case with the Academy isn't much different from Eminem's with the grammy folk. "If you don't love the hollywood lifestyle and ur superiors to bits, like hayyll we're gonna give you an award."
LOTR deserved each and every one of those awards. It defined what the movie-going experience was all about. Thank god they didn't mess it up with time around.

Charlize Theron looked charming, though the dress was ordinary for Oscars. Most of the dresses were blah this year.

I liked Pirates Of The Caribbean, but Johnny Depp - hot? His acting was amazing though.
I think I've had just about as much as I can stomach of LOTR and good though it was, it's a relief that it's over. I like Pirates best of all the films I saw last year and though Johnny Depp wasn't really Oscar material his character along with Gollum were the outstanding ones for me. Didn't see Sean Penn in Mystic River but he's a good actor - but I don't like him.
I am so happy (talking like a girl here) that Sean Penn won the Oscar finally. He is not just a great actor but a gem of a human being too. You had to see his efforts before the invasion of Iraq and just listen to his views on World Link TV. He is a genuine guy. Actually, I saw Mystic River on it’s opening day and predicted right here in SS that both him and Tim Robbins delivered academy performance. I am happy my predictions came through. 
Johnny Depp is also one of my favorite actors and I gotta say he was loooking really good on Oscar night. Looks like he finally got his teeth fixed after POTC. His character was not academy material although his superb acting almost made him win the award.
In conclusion, my high point of the ceremony was Sean Penn’s acceptance speech and low point has got to be Bill Murray’s face when they announced the best actor winner.
