i'd love to do a rajhastani themed mehendi for my brother. i have a friend from rajhastan who'd be able to get us the original lehenga's and all of that... dont know if it'll fly with his fiance though :p

teelobhain, I have always wanted a punjab themed function, where just like you put it, we brought punjabi to us. what are some of the details of the evening? centerpieces? decorations? how did they incorporate elements of punjab into their evening? i am dying to know!
I went to a wedding in a place in london where they filmed Harry Potters dining hall, and it looked just like the film! All the guests were greeted at the entrance by the bride and groom themselves, and then directed to the reception room to mingle. They had a tabla band playing and waiters serving mocktails and canapes.
Followed by a lovely banquet in the main hall.
Thing about this was hardly any kids. I think they still managed to squeeze in 300 guests.

Themes are a good idea for mehndis especially...
There was this one wedding, and the bride and groom had the most interesting menu in which they served food from every country in Asia they were planning to visit for their honeymoon.
And they had country flags...
But if somebody wants a theme..than they should definately try to stick with it for everything..food, decor, dresses etc., than it seems very exciting.
I also like the idea of having a seperate lobby where guests can mingle and have drinks...
yeah don't do the bellydancer idea, my friend did that and the bellydancer was going through the tables dancing but it was soooo awkward and weird cuz like she was shakin her chest in my dad's face and other ppl's and everyone was like eerily silent. thank god the rail gaddi song came and there was no way she could dance to that.

^ yeah, belly dancers are definitely for specific crowds... not everyone will be comfortable with them.

Don't do bellydancers at desi weddings. Trust me, I've been to one like this, and all the grandmas were fainting, all the women red in the face, and all the uncles looking down at their food pretending they didn't notice a woman shaking her moneymakers in their face. Better off doing a desi dance routine (bhangra or filmi).
