“Dhothi” seems a fantastic and “very dignified” dress. Can any body tell us about its origin?
Re: Origin of Dhoti, Dress of the Punjab!
tis rather sexy I agree, don't know the origins...
Re: Origin of Dhoti, Dress of the Punjab!
did i hear someone say elegant??
Re: Origin of Dhoti, Dress of the Punjab!
“Dignity” and “elegance” are subjective…
Amongst some people a baggy tent salwar and a turban too big for the head is dignified, to others a skintight churidar pajama (which looks like chicken legs) and a wooly quaid hat (which looks like a dead guinea-pig) is dignified but others will find both these form of dress most hideous and unaesthetic…
To Punjabis Punjabi attire is beautiful and most elegant… I’m not a fan of the brightly coloured Sikh turbans or the flamboyantly coloured Bhangra costumes but those are artist-costumes not everday attire, I also don’t like khussa shoes which curl up at the end, but the striaght ones are fine.
When we visit mom’s side of the family, boys only wear sarong (dhoti) during the summer, it’s more comfy and aesthetic than any of the stuffy costumes I have to wear in other prudish parts of Pakistan, the full attire with a cool kurta and a taveetri in the neck is also quite cool…
My mom has the female versions of the dhoti called laacha and they look more elegant than any gypsy-like costumes I’ve seen other women wear, to see what a laacha looks like click here.

True but I have yet to see someone dare wear dhothi in a formal setting outside the close confines of villages. If you insist they do, then please come to hidepark in a dhoti for me to see how elegant you look.
Or let us request Gen. Musharaf to give his next address to the General Assembly, UN, in a dhoti. How about this proposal?

Dhoti ------ very relaxing dress. But I didn't wear it ?
Re: Origin of Dhoti, Dress of the Punjab!
Different version of dhoti have been used widely in Asia. Its not unique to Punjabis.
South Indians wear dhoti, commonly called Lungi.
Bongalis wear dhoti with shirt on top.
Arabs wear dhoti as well, Rasoolullaah (pbuh) has been reported to wear dhoti on some occasions.
Now whats the origin of Naswar.

Pictures/examples please?
Re: Origin of Dhoti, Dress of the Punjab!
Culture is forever evolving, all forms of clothing is universal property, most urban Pakistanis outside villages be they Punjabi or Pukhtoon wear pant and shirt which is universal attire now.
I don’t see any Pukhtoons wearing a turban, a pattu on their shoulder and a salwar kamiz (peran tomban to afghans) in Hyde Park either, does it mean these things are unelegant? No, like dhoti they are just not suitable for the weather in this country.
To some extent dhoti is dieing down even in Pakistan, I guess it is just going out of fashion but it’s no big deal as salwar kameeez is also a Pakistani attire, like I said cultures change and evolve. Just as the young generation in NWFP (Khyber) favour pakol’s and skullcaps over turban and Pakhtana’s don’t dress like this anymore but rather like this, the dress of Punjab is also changing…
PS. LOL General Musharraf is not Punjabi, he is Karachian, not every non-Pukhtoon Pakistani is a “Panjabay” you know..
