So i was watching some video about the protest to allow prayers in public school around GTA. There were number of argumetns going on and then some people came up that “how can you teach a realigion in which it says to kill chrisitan/jews if they dun follow Quran/Mohammed”
Some other said that Quran teaches to corner christian/jews and force them to accept islam otherwise kill them.
I know, that Quran can’t state these things .. but i wana make sure. Are there any direct orders or something like this in Quran?
Here is your answer it is a long read but the answer is not as black and white because there are verses in Quran which those people quote but they are taken out of context.
Having seen that life is sacred in Islam, the question arises about the wide-spread misconception about Islam regarding Qur’anic order to kill all Jews and Christians as quoted to be mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah & Surah An-Nisa.
The truth is that random selection of a single “line” from a paragraph cannot be treated as the crux of whole message. If done so, it may result in misunderstanding of the message. Same is being done with the Ayahs of Surah Al-Baqarah & Surah An-Nisa of Qur’an.
English translation of relevant Ayahs of Surah Al-Baqarah (Ayah 190-94) is given below: “Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loves not transgressors. And kill them wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, kill them. Such is the reward of those who reject faith. But if they cease, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression. The prohibited month, for the prohibited month, and so for all things prohibited, there is the law of equality. If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress you likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves.” *
Following Ayahs of Surah An-Nisaa’ (Ayahs 89-91) are also relevant:
*“Butthey wish that you should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they are): so take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah. But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever you find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks. Except those who join a group between whom and you there is a treaty (of peace), or those who approach you with hearts restraining them from fighting you as well as fighting their own people. If Allah had pleased, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you: therefore if they withdraw from you but fight you not, and (instead) send you (guarantees of) peace, then Allah has opened no way for you (to fight against them). Others you will find that wish to gain your confidence as well as that of their people: every time they are sent back to temptation, they succumb thereto; if they withdraw not from you nor give you (guarantees) of peace besides restraining their hands, seize them and slay them wherever you get them; in their case We have provided you with a clear argument against them.”
After reading the above Ayahs with an open mind, it becomes clear that:
These Ayahs DO NOT give an open license to kill all pagans, Jews and Christians – Fighting is allowed only against those who fight Muslims, i.e. self-defense, or who spread oppression and tumult;
Islam FORBIDS transgression, even in the fighting, and orders Muslims to be afraid of Allah, because Allah is with the persons who restrain themselves from transgression;
Fighting is allowed against oppressors, not the common citizens. Islam considers oppression worse than murder;
Islam orders to KILL only those who take part in fight (i.e. the soldiers). Killing innocents (civilians) is NOT allowed;
Islam ORDERS forgiveness, if the enemy surrenders in a war;
Fighting is to be STOPPED when tumult or oppression is over;
Islam FORBIDS hostility against civilians or persons who are not practicing oppression;
Islam FORBIDS from making friends from amongst renegades & traitors and orders to kill them;
Islam ORDERS to forgive the renegades if they join the group with whom Muslims had signed a peace treaty.
By reading the above, what do you you think? Have you seen any constitution, or any other religion, more lenient in war than Islam? Are above Ayahs of Qur’an barbaric? Do the above Ayahs teach intolerance? Is Islam spreading violence & terrorism? Does Islam give a free permission to kill anyone anywhere? Decision is yours!
Jews and Christians lived in Madina along with the Muslims. Look at history and you will find Christian/Jew individuals and group visiting Prophet (saww) in Madina all the time. There is a famous narration of Mubahila where Christian priests from Najran came to Prophet (saww) and held a discussions with him for days inside the mosque of Madina.
Where is the order to unconditionally kill Jews or Christians?

This argument will not fly because they do not teach their own religion in their educational institutions and they are not hold a mass in public school either.
There is no order in Quran to kill people of the book. Places where Quran calls for qital are where mushrikeen of Makkah are mentioned, the one who were fighting against Muslims and trying to kill them to begin with.
The answer by Mirch says all. I just want to add that we need to understand the context of each verse and when and where it was revealed and who it was referring to. That's why it's important to read or listen to the tafseer of Quran.

These are allowed only in war if there is a war between Christians and Muslims or Jew and Muslims we are allowed to kill but we can kill only children and can't kill any civilian or burn any civilian property
