Jacob Oram is willing to cut off his injured ring finger if it is going to prevent him from playing in the World Cup. Oram will try specially designed splints and pain-killers to ease the pain, but if the problem won’t go away he will consider an amputation.
“If it means cutting the finger off, if that’s the worse-case scenario, if that’s the last resort, I’ll do that, there’s no way I’m missing this,” he told NZPA. Oram suffered the break during the first Chappell-Hadlee Trophy match and he will not test it until the New Zealand squad’s first practice session in Barbados on Saturday.
However, Oram is unsure how his finger is healing under the protective strapping. “The plan is get to the West Indies, whip it off and assess the inflammation,” he told the agency. “We’ve got a couple of techniques in terms of taping and a couple of guards which are a lot thinner so they can fit into a batting glove. I’m confident it’ll be fine.”
He is more worried by the prospect of another skyed catch after his doctors doubted he would be troubled by balls coming straight at him. Oram said the initial impact of the high chance at Wellington did not hurt and it was not until he looked down that he knew something was wrong.
“You know when your finger’s not going straight it’s bad news,” he said. “I thought the worst straight away - two weeks out from the World Cup and you’re finger’s going at right angles. I’ve seen one replay where I look happy and then I’m swearing - it didn’t go down well with mum.”
Im not surprised, he has done a few crazy things here, but then again, that hows kiwi's are built tuff :) ........ this should abit of mysery to the kangaroos from the outback :P
I'm sure Akhtar would be willing to run in with a prosthetic laat if it was required. He is flat footed anyway and runs in like a ghora; now that's toughness :o .
^ yeah with ORAMs logic…Asif should think about amputating the elbow and Akhtar should amputate the knee…
as well as both drinking ACID to clear the traces of Nand…
I call this, a pure dedication. A spirit of a human can be shown in alot of ways, and this is way up there. Instead of accepting a briefcase full of worthless pieces of paper, he is willing to sacrifice a part of himself in order to represent his country.
Replays after replays were shown when he took that catch, and even frames were freezed the instant his finger was sandwiched in-between. I looked at the guy and from a thousand miles away, felt thresholds of pain in his eyes. Looked terrible, the whole scene.
You must be kidding me. And it’s not as if he is Bradman ka chacha or anything, he is just Jacob Oram. An ordinary bowler and a big-hitting batsman; the Kiwis have thousands of those lying around :o .
yaar all i'm trying to say is, its him making the decision, its not something influential - the nzcb is not asking him to do that... i really hope he doesn't do it tho.
^^ I saw the video and mind you its a torture kind of injury, I'd be happy to get hit with a ball on a fleshy part but not on fingers like that, coz of WC 07 he will amputate or not will depend on the 2nd blow or injury he gets on the finger, I can say that coz I didnt go to the doctor after getting a similar blow on my finger and now I have speed breaker bump and you can feel the parting bone, the doc told me after x-rays that I hope you dont get another big blow on the same finger coz there is a risk of nerve damage in that finger; you might loose the sense of touch.
