Opportunity, the second of two Nasa rovers, has successfully landed on the Martian surface where it will search for signs of water on the planet.
The new rover touched down at 0505GMT, halfway around the red planet from where Spirit rover landed on 3 January.
Let’s hope this one gets up and running 1 in 3 is not a bad failure rate.
A quick look at the landing sites to date including the Viking missions (before someone asks about the possibility of jump leads for Spirit and a search and rescue for Beagle 2!).

I hope they are able to collect many samples for study here on Earth. A few years ago, I was able to study some of the lunar samples via a NASA center nearby. It would be so interesting to see some of the Martian samples close-up, too!
