I usually do not like TVs over fireplace. I think it takes away the beauty of fireplace. However I am having a space problem. The fireplace is a gas fireplace, but I still like it. Besides due to a small family room, I think the TV will be too high for comfortable watching.
My husband thinks we should put it over there and save some space by removing the TV stand.
Opinions ??
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
I would agree with you 100%. TV over fireplace would be too high for comfortable viewing, plus the aesthetic factor would be very low (as you mentioned)
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
A tv would take away the beauty of the fireplace and it would also make that area of the room seem congested.
If its too high , it's too high and should not be done.
If it is not too high the TV can always be in a custom slim cabinet on top of fireplace which disguises it as a mirror or painting when not in use so the aesthetics are somewhat managed.
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
any chance of using a different wall to put the TV on? so that the height issue is sorted and you can chance the seating accordingly..
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
I do it in The Sims, but not in real life.

I think its too high but I dont understand why half the people put the TV up there. Is it just me who has trouble watching the TV like that ?
A slim cabinet sounds like a better option if I have to put it up there. Thanks

It is an open plan kind of living room. We have 3 walls. One has fireplace, other has windows so that leaves only one wall where I have put the TV stand right now. We also have bookshelf along with the fireplace so it feels like there are too many things around there.
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
totally depends on how far is the distance b/w fireplace and couch in front of it.
opinion about TV over fireplace
Nope I wouldn't have a tv over a fireplace neither
I personally find the TV above the fireplace look and feel ridiculous. Yeah many people do it, but it's still bad viewing angle in most cases.
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
^ not only that but it is bad for your eyes too! TV should be put at eye level in sitting position, any higher and it puts strain on your eyes. The whole idea is ridiculous. The only thing hanging above a fireplace should be a mirror or a painting. Also if you have something hanging on the walls on either side of a fireplace then I would leave empty space above the fireplace because otherwise you overwhelm the whole wall.
Re: opinion about TV over fireplace
My SIL has her TV placed above the fireplace and to be honest.. its pretty stupid. Its so far away and high.. its really pain in the neck to watch tv. She does have an awesome surround system which help with the volume .. but watching the TV.. i absolutely hated it.. She also has 3 walls and an open living room. Watching TV shouldn't be that hard right.. keep it at eye level.
