Yaara Jee, if you can't see the contents of the CD in your notebook, but can boot other computers with the same CD. It is right time that you change your CD-ROM drive, :)

hmmm...
So it can't read that particular CD. I think Xeno has mentioned in one of his previous posts that you can burn a CD for specific CD-Drives only. Could that be the case?
Anyway, if you can use an external CD-ROM drive and change the BIOS settings accordingly, it should be possible to boot from there. But I would first test if that CD can be read by the external CD-ROM.

BUT Orpheus can access OTHER CDs with the same drive, which confuses me.
Orpheus, I take external drive is a USB drive? in that case it won't boot from external drive unless your BIOS supports USB boot drives.

u must check ur boot sequence
restart ur system and press F2 or F1

He can't see the contents of CD from windows explorer as well. Which absolutely has nothing to do with the boot sequence.

ok so what i am now doing is downloading the originl drivers that came with the laptop from son’y support site, if this does not work i really am going to smash my laptop and not return to GS for a month.

Yehi to ek bohat bara sawal bana hoa hay...
- He has a CD which he can read with any other CD-ROM but not with his notebook's (actually his laptop has a DVD-Drive)
- He can read other CDs with his notebook's CD-ROM drive.
So now that leaves us with these options (for OS installation):
- Either change the CD-ROM drive of the notebook
- use an external CD-ROM, which is most probably a USB one. And hope that BIOS settings allow you to boot from USB drives.
- Try different CDs unless one lets the notebook boot

Main reason is SUPPORT. Windows 7 is beta version, hence not much support there.

wht is UDF (universal data format )?
What r different version of Linux ? Do the same command can run over all versions ? do all provide the same kinda environment???
UDF is the File Format used in CDs DVDs, just like your other File Formats like FAT, FAT32, NTFS, HFS, EXT etc., Most DVD videos uses UDF file format.
Or if your refering the .udf file extension, its an image of CD/DVD created using MagicISO or similar ISO authoring tools. You need MagicISO to open and extract it.
There are different Distros (or Packages) of linux. They all are same except there use of Desktop enviornment and the software packages comes with them.
All the Distros will have a Kernal and a Shell or File Manager or Desktop Enviornment (like Windows Explorer in Windows systems).
Most Popular Distros are Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Arch Linux, Fedora, Redhat, Knopix, GOS, Slax,Backtrack, MintOS, pclinux etc.
There are mainly three Desktop Enviornments, namely Gnome, KDE and XFCE
Ubuntu uses Gnome - its almost like Windows Explorer
Kubuntu uses KDE as its default Desktop Enviornment, it looks cool, but bit heavy on the system.
Xubuntu uses XFCE - this is the litest of 'em all.
Ubuntu and its derivatives (Kubuntu and Xubuntu) releases new Versions every 6 months, and the Version number stands for the Year and Month of its release, Eg: Ubuntu 8.10 implies it is released on October 2008.
Best thing about the Ubuntu is its a well supported and well maintained Distro, gets updates and patches regularly.
If you are new to Linux, go for Ubuntu its almost like Windows. Download the iso file from Ubuntu site, burn it, restart your system and boot from the CD. as its LiveCD, you can use the full power of Ubuntu without installing a single file on your hard Disk. IF you need any help in getting and running Ubuntu or any other linux distro, let me know.
And about Commands, Most Bash Commands (the command system or scripting system used in linux) works on all linux distros.
You can even run almost all Windows applications and Games on Linux nowadays using WINE.
P.S: Am a big Linux and Open Source Software Supporter/Contributor and uses Backtrack 3 and Ubuntu.

I wanna be able to use Windows 7 frequently, but my default lcd always goes out of range. :(
So i've been using vista without really test driving Win 7. I have to switch to another lcd to boot into Windows 7 each time.
Any solution to this?
And yes the drivers are updated. It won't even load into default resolution of 800x600. what da dealio? :(
Do i need to get a better monitor? Cuz the one that does show it boot is fairly new (less than 1 year), whereas this one's perhaps older than that. Both are LCD.
PS: Vista loads just fine and the monitor does not go out of range.
