Open plan kitchen...

I personally love open plan kitchens …mainly due to the fact that i dont feel secluded and am able to be part of the general happenings around the home ..

Few friends who do have walled kitchens , I find it really awkward that they are completely lost in their world when they are in the kitchen cooking or working …

Secondly I find that the kitchen starts looking alot of spacious when its open plan .. and not to forget it looks stylish as well … I heard that in Pakistan open plan kitchens are very much in fashion these days …

What do you guys prefer ? open plan or a closedseparate room kitchen?

Re: Open plan kitchen...

All the apartments that I lived in had open kitchens. It is a nice layout but the drawback is that you need to keep the kitchen in immaculate condition which can be difficult especially when throwing parties.
Also as much as I like to be a part of the whole get to gather, it is a little difficult to handle cooking disaster in front of guests.
In my home we have a nice setup of kitchen, family room and breakfast nook as one open space while a separate living room and dinning for more formal guests.

Re: Open plan kitchen...

i have the open concept kitchen i love it since i do not feel trapped, however one downfall would be the cooking smell it can't be locked in.. so i have to use candles, open windows and keep the exhaust running on full even after i'am done cooking.

Re: Open plan kitchen...

i love open plan kitchens too, reason as above...
i use candles too and ofcourse exhaust and windows all the time.

Re: Open plan kitchen...

I prefer walled kitchens...a few reason being stated above...it is hard to keep it immaculate all the time especially if there is company and also because I prefer to be alone in the kitchen when I am doing stuff in there and have guests over. But after I had my daughter and when I used to be in the kitchen, and had her in the living room I wasn't able to always see her and felt that a open plan kitchen was better. Now it is different...she stays with me in the kitchen...!!

Re: Open plan kitchen…

i used to love open kitchen n got one but now the major problem my sweet lil angel whenevr i m cooking she is in my legs i have to block passage by keeping chairs now since she is growing up now she drags the chair n makes her way in the kitchen n yes thn she will explore each n every corner of kitchen

food smell is not an issue i simply open the balcony n within 30 mins everything is clear poarties r fun wth open kitchen my frnds accompany me in the kitchen n mean while v keep acheck on hubbies wht r they doing n participate in every gupshup there

no doubt open kitchen looks beautiful when neat n tidy n well organized but now i dont like it since i have to close it wth the separters i m not liking those separters but i hav to no option bc of naughty baby n she holds them n crying n requesting me to let her come in it seems some prisoner is standing n begging for release :smack:

Re: Open plan kitchen…

I think its a compulsion with open plan kitchens that you got to make an extra effort to keep it clean all the time .. to be honest I see that as a very positive thing … coz that way even lazies like me are forced to keep it clean all the time , which is a good thing ..

I know in Pakistan some homes have taken a middle route .. they have a huge window opening between the kitchen and the living room wall .. they either have glass in there or its just open … that way its not an open plan kitchen and neither is a fully walled kitchen :cb: smart nation , I tell you

Re: Open plan kitchen...

We are going to be renovating my parents house soon as this is a big question. We all hate a curry smelling house and clothes, so that's a big no. And it's not just about keeping it clean, when you're hosting large dinner parties (we had a sit down dinner with 30 ppl last week), mess before, during and after is inevitable and you don't want it right next to where people are sitting.

But then, our current kitchen is large and the position of it in the house mean guests always gather in it when we're hosting davats anyway, so does it make any difference?

We're going to have a separate dining room anyway but the question we're currently going over is do we keep the new kitchen and family dining separate or open plan?

Re: Open plan kitchen...

Stoppit, i think the fact that you guys generally have large gatherings, might make it difficult to have an open plan kitchen. I have an open plan kitchen and I love it to bits .. but I know that when I am hosting dawats back to back ( between 15-20 people ) the place does indeed start getting over crowded with dishes .. so i can imagine it must be much more mess with an even higher number of people invited for dawats ...

Perhaps have a separate dining room is the answer to that ...

Re: Open plan kitchen...

i would love to have an open plan kitchen as we r 2 people only and the dawat gathering is not crowdy at all....

Re: Open plan kitchen...

Am I the only one who doesn't like open plan kitchen? When we were looking for a new place, I made sure we didn't get one with open plan kitchen. I absolutely can not stand those with my love for cooking. I love having my own space, private when I cook. My kitchen is big eat in kitchen, and a seperate dining area. I do keep my kitchen clean and organized so that's not a problem but I would hate open plan kitchen with the everyday cooking I do.

Re: Open plan kitchen...

Spiral, you did mention the key difference in your post.. for someone who likes to have their personal private place , Kitchen can be exactly that considering how much time we spend there ... so yeah, its understandable that you like a walled private kitchen.

I know one of my aunts specially had her open plan kitchen turned into a walled kitchen when she bought a home ..
she said she didnt like people looking at her when she was working , it made her feel conscious all the time ..

Re: Open plan kitchen...

i love the fact that the kitchen is open plan and fairly central being next to the family room and is an eat in kitchen, with the living and dining room in a perpendicular wing so it is the best of both the walkout to the backyard is also right from the eat in area of the kitchen so when doing BBQ which is just outside it al flow very well. half wall with counter between kitchen and family room runs much of the length of the room so its a little break without closing it off. thought about taking that wall out but it serves its purpose as a counter and a little break

I would actually want to move the cooktop from the counter to the island so its even more central, but then island for prep and cooking on the counter has its own pluses.

yes, it has to be kept clean for us because I hate clutter and it being in the center of the house means it must be kept clean.

Re: Open plan kitchen...

I like the open floor plans. I like entertaining, talking and having a nice flow. It can be inconvenient but the pluses are better than the minuses.
