Actually, no. Sana Safinaz started the trend with the long shirts, I remember looking at various indian designers and they were still doing the short shirts with shawalwars whereas in Pakistan, the shalwar is basically going extinct now. And Nomi Ansari and Mehdi started the trend with the revival of anarkalis back in last 2008 and they are still here. I run a fashion blog so I keep track of these things. =)

I never did fashion blogging on my own personal website but I’ve had a fashion topic on a desi forum since March of 2004…I’ve kept an eye on fashion show and trends for some time bc i’m weird and colors and desi fashion makes me happy. I joined this website when someone alerted me a person on GS was basically copying my exact posts and pictures and adding it here. Eventually I liked the memebers and stuck around

I have pics from a diwali fashion show in the fall of 2007 (music masala diwali fashion show in sugarland, tx where the mayor of sugarland also modeled with his wife which was really too cute) and anarkalis were just becoming popular…they started to get a revival when aishwarya’s movie umrao jaan became a focus of fashion back in 2006. as for long kameez the trend came and went but you are right indian designers gave up long kameez and pakistani designs brought it back. however at the movie premiere for Saawariya which was released also diwali of 2007 rani mukherjee sported a long kameez and flared pants, this trend** did not pick up in india** but flourished in pakistan. I can easily look at my friends weddings pics from 2007 and recall that short kameez was still the thing for pakistani girls to wear bc of the film Jab We Met. 2007 pakistani wise was all about patiala pants and shorter shirts. Now i don’t know when Sana Safinaz started theirs but i will say they made it very popular and the trend was a huge hit that’s still around and i’m happy for that bc i love the look.

also i’ve posted this pic before bc i was upset that i had to model this tent styled anarkali with churidaar sleeves in march of 2008. I felt huge bc it gives you no shape. you can see the work at the bottom of the darker one eventually became popular with pakistan designers. the concept of a damask thread work or print for the bottom of a frock or anarkali was not something I had seen until I was put into this dress. Pakistanis started doing this kinda thing a few years after that. same goes for paneled anarkali dresses…i really think indians started it. ribbon border and everything is seen in the dress below…

I could be wrong and I suppose at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter who started what but I just had to put my 2 cents in.
