Curatorial Description:

We would like to invite Muslim artists working in a diverse array of media (painting, drawing, printmaking, calligraphy, photography, digital/animation, video, film, sculpture, installation, and performance art) to submit their work for consideration for a new show opening in January 2007. We are seeking contemporary and innovative works that highlight themes such as contradictions of belief and practice, political and social injustice, religious commentary, human rights, sex/sexuality, personal insight and experience. Artists whose work challenges cultural norms, has a sense of identity, and is rooted in religious and cultural contexts are especially encouraged to apply.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Email all submissions to artshow2007@ yahoo.com
  • Artists are invited to submit 5 (five) works for consideration. There is NO FEE for submission.
  • Two and three dimensional work in all media will be considered. Please note work should not exceed 6 feet in any direction or weigh more than 50 pounds.
  • Please email your images as JPG files at 72dpi and approximately 4x6 inches wide. File size should be no more than 500K. If you are selected to participate, a high resolution image will be requested for promotions.
  • As a Word document, please attach an Artist statement (1 page maximum).

**Deadline
**

  • The final postmarked deadline is November 7th, 2006.
  • There will be no extension of the deadline; all entries must be postmarked by that date. Selected work will be on view from January 15 through March 16, 2007. An artists’ reception is scheduled for Thursday, January 18, 2007 from 6-8 p.m.

**Eligibility
**

  • The competition is open to all Muslim artists in US and Canada. However, shipment of the art work, to and from the arts center is the responsibility of the artist.
  • Participation is limited to artists 18 years of age or older.

Requirements and Restrictions

  • All work must be ready to hang or install. Artwork that is to be hung on walls must be securely wired. Inappropriately presented work will not be accepted. We can not guarantee protection of extremely fragile work.
  • The staff can not provide help with delivery of the work, to or from the gallery.
  • Please have printed instructions and/or diagrams available if your work requires special handling, installation or display.
  • For artists who are submitting installations or complex, multi-part works assistance will be required for gallery installation. If complex work is selected for the exhibition, artists must bring their own assistants and equipment for installation. Please contact us if you have questions concerning this requirement.
  • All Loan Forms and Condition Reports will be given to artists when work is dropped off at the arts center. You do not need forms prior to this time.

**Liability
**

  • We can not accept work that is valued at more than $6,000.
  • Work will be insured for the exhibition period only. By taking part in the open call, artists agree not to hold the arts center responsible for any loss or damage during the delivery, storage or curatorial process.
  • The arts center staff will take due care when handling your submission but they are not responsible for damage due to poor construction, framing, wiring or other inherent problems in the art work.

**Invitation
**

  • Announcement cards (25) will be available to all artists whose work is selected for the exhibition.
