KARACHI, Dec 3: Interesting facts have surfaced during the ongoing city-wide campaign launched by the city government against professional beggars and the mafia behind it.

At a meeting held under the chairmanship of Karachi Nazim Naimatullah Khan here on Tuesday, the campaign coordinator, Colonel Ehtesham, said that so far more than 2,500 beggars had been arrested. And some of them were found in possession of mobile telephones, prepaid calling cards and credit cards of various banks. Besides, some of them carried as much cash as Rs15,000.

Many of the beggars pleaded that if their cash was returned to them, they would leave the city for good. Some of them stated that during Ramazan and Eid, they had a target of collecting up to Rs50,000 in alms.

During the campaign such beggars were also arrested who pretended to be blind and walking with the help of a boy or girl. But when the volunteers of the anti-beggary squad tried to arrest them, they started running very fast.

Some of the beggars were wearing shoes worth Rs1,500 and the clothes recovered from their baggage were quite expensive.

A young and healthy beggars said that his wife demanded Rs300 daily, which he could not earn in any other business or employment. His wife was naturally happy with him as he daily earned from Rs400 to Rs500 in the begging business.

NAZIM: Karachi Nazim Naimatulllah Khan has said that the business of professional beggars in Karachi is being managed by a mafia. This mafia brings such people from upcountry and also arranges for their board and lodging. Particularly during the last 10 days of Ramazan and during Eid, this mafia occupies the spaces under bridges.

The Nazim said Karachiites were quite uneasy with this menace of beggars and the city government had launched a vigorous campaign against them. But it had not received satisfactory cooperation from the city police despite the cooperation available from NGOs and civil organizations.

He said this campaign achieved a good success with the cooperation of the fire brigades, Civil Defence, Social Welfare and NGOs.

The Nazim stated this at a meeting of Town Nazimeen and city government officials on Monday evening. The meeting was summoned to review the progress of the anti-beggary campaign under the Community Development Department.

During a briefing, the Nazim was told that the city government had set up camps at busy shopping centres, business centres and roundabouts. The campaign had also been started to create awareness among the people of professional beggars during which more than 2,500 beggars had been arrested and some of them were let off on the condition that they would no longer beg.

Naimatullah Khan said that in this campaign, the Nazimeen were also being involved so that the city was protected against the beggars during Eid days. He directed that volunteers be posted at roundabouts, markets, mosques and Eidgahs to scare away the beggars.- APP

high tech beggers, reminds me of a skit from 50/50 where the guy only has a 100 rupee bill so the begger pulls out a cash register and rings it in and gives the change to the person. I guess beggers have benefitted from technology boom. I wonder when they will set up websites and send you spam mail for bheek.

hahaha :hehe:

btw, with the inflation in Pakistan, what is the minimum acceptable amount to a begger. I think in 1997, they were aksing for 10 rupay a jump from 80s when 2 rupee note will be acceptable.

LOL @ spam mail for bheek!

then ,i think indian beggars are more good.for ythem even 5 rs is a surplus amount.

do think begging must be encouraged?i never encourage these people but it has become a common practise in india that beggars sneak in to railway and bus coaches and beg for money.a few street beggars in Jamshedpur make stains and scratches on the automobile bodies,if they are denied of the money.ithink governments have to put serious attentions to rehabilitate these people.

share-the-star

sadly the social services in pakistan are so bad that you cant expect the government to do anything. there are very needy people.

I once ran into a kind old gentleman who was teary eyed when he asked me for some help in getting some Flour. He was not your typical street beggar, he told me he woudl repay me when he can but his son died and he takes care of his grandkids and daughter in law, wife and daughters and just had no money left. I got him some stuff and even though he protested dropped him off at his place and he was not lying about anything he had told me.

On the othe rhand there are plenty of stories of blind beggers who can see and invalids who all of a sudden get up and run when getting in trouble with the law.

How does one who who really needs help and who does not? I think groups like edhi are doign great work in Pakistan but there are those who need help or fall on hard times and just have no where to turn to.

Ideally the state would clean-up all the beggars, lock them up temperoraly, and then establish some type of welfare system where genuine cases such as cripples ect could get a decent go at life.

Oho what a progress!!
