From Ka’b ibn Ujrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, “That the Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, missed Ka’b and so asked about him, they replied, “He is ill.” So the Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, left and walked until he came to him. When he entered upon Ka’b, he said, “Receive the glad tidings, O Ka’b!” So his mother said, “O Ka’b, congratulations! For you is Paradise!” The Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said, “Who is the one who is taking an oath upon Allaah [that Ka'b has a place in Paradise]?” Ka’b replied, “She is my mother, O Messenger of Allaah.” So he, صلى الله عليه وسلم, replied, “And how do you know, O mother of Ka’b [that he is going to Paradise]? Maybe Ka’b spoke about something which did not concern him or he withheld giving something which was insignificant?”[1]

This is a nice and comforting thought but i dont think anyone can say for sure "i am definietly going to heaven"

and the Prophet s.a.w ? what about the numerous ahadith quoted by sunnis and 12er imamis that so and so person has a definate place in paradise ?
certainly ka'b b ujrah didnt do anything to guarentee a place in paradise , but can he be compared to someone like abu ubaidah b Jarrah r.a who is ashra mubashira ?

Salaamun alaikum
Obviously, what is meant that no-one who does not have a guarantee from Allaah or the Prophet, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, can say that they are going to Paradise for sure. So the Prophet, sallalaahu alaihi wa sallam, the ten Companions who were given the glad-tidings of Paradise and anyone else who was told by the Prophet, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, that they will go to Paradise - will in fact go to Paradise. No-one else has a guarantee, and Allaah knows best, and this is basically an encouragement to keep trying and not to take Paradise for granted and thus become lazy.
