Folks, I think it’s time that my kid actually touch the computer, we’ve kept her away from screens so far but I think it’s time. She needs help with her mouse/hand/eye coordination and general computer use.
Are there any good sites out there, free or subscription based, for reading and math for 1st Graders?
In other news, what do people think of common core?
Abcmouse.com is really good. It has a fee though but my girls love it. Also, I do let them go to nickjr.com, pbskids and Disneyjr.com to play their games.
If you want something purely educational, my kids’ school stresses thatquiz dot com, I think it starts from first grade…I’ll add some others as I remember
I dont have anything to add to your question but I want to know how did you keep her away from tv/computer for 5 years? as in no screen time at all, some supervised videos? educational dvds, apps, or nothing? would love to hear the advice.
ahhh aahmed…thank the stars there’s someone else out there that sees eye to eye with me on keeping the kids off the screen/pc/device.
I managed to keep noor from the computer until she was 6 years old and in first grade…Allah ka shukar. Everyone told me that I was wrong to do this and that she would have trouble catching up but I proved them wrong.
To answer your question: try khanacademy…it’s one of the best and kids love it.
my daughter’s school starts ICT from the pre-school level.
at home she uses nickjr.com , pbskids on my laptop and also use various educational apps on her tablet. Those apps have helped her learn shapes especially till quite advanced level (considering her age).
