Online PhD

I know someone with an online PhD.

How good is an online PhD? How can someone do a phd without actually being with his/her advisor?

Any ideas? Comments, thoughts?

make sure it is froma reputable uiversity. internationally reckognized. you can check it online or soemthing. but i would stay away from online education in general.

Re: Online PhD

I doubt the value of such an offering. Also, having been on a selection committee where we interviewed a candidate who had an online Ph.D., I can tell you that the committee didn't really look favorably upon that candidate. A Ph.D. is supposed to be a serious and full-time commitment and it doesn't make sense why one would pursue it online since the main value proposition of an online offering is to make it more "convenient".

There's much more to a Ph.D. than just doing research in a silo... your interaction in an academic environment with peers, professors, students and researchers give you a lot of insight about what your career is going to be like. You get better prepared for that environment. Besides, being with other students and in constant touch with your supervisor and supervisory committee members for their timely feedback can do a long way in terms of motivation and keeping on track.

I've personally experienced this first hand... since after finishing my residency requirements, and not being regularly on campus, my productivity was considerably affected.

Re: Online PhD

I agree Lucid. An online Phd just doesn't seem to be that good quality wise. How can a person pursuing an online Phd be at par with the regular candidates. I feel that that the university environment and the contact with academicians is quite necessary.

Most importantly a doctorate degree in my opinion is suppose to prodce a complete person who is able to solve problems. Afterall if it is the highest qualification than it should highly reflect in a person.

Re: Online PhD

not a good idea.
not as structured at all as real classes.
but if self study and distant communication is something with which you are good, then perhaps you can take on an online graduate level course.

but without lab works, or field work, still the degree of real learning may not come about, through distant learning mode, than it would if you had taken a full time course on a physical campus.

also, the most impt thing during a graduate program, is the relationship building between academic faculty & young research scholar. you will not want to miss out on that.
