Online petitions

Every once in a while, a thread or a video pops up in which people ask you to sign some petition for some cause. I’m just wondering, do they even work? If you can think of an online petition that was actually effective, please give details of it here.

Also, do you think online petitions should allow anonymity to the signatories or should they ask for personal details such as name, address etc?

Re: Online petitions

Intuitively, I would think they would work. Especially for minority- related issues. The outcomesxmay not be quantifiable. There may not be an immediately measurable metric to estimate effectiveness. But think of it as building a bridge, one rock/ brick at a time. Each signature represents a brick.

In The Ramayana, the vanaras were building a bridge to Lanka. An ant was also helping out. The vanaras ridiculed it. But Rama chastised them. Said every bit helps.

Yes anonymity option is a MUST.

Yep…
As said by Oscar Wilde,

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

Now, this may not apply to everyone, but it applies to most people.
