Online Fundraising

A few days ago there was a tragic car accident that took the lives of 3 siblings under the age of 10 and their grandfather. The vehicle they were in was broadsided by another SUV that was driven by an intoxicated man.

You can read about the horrible incident here: Marco Muzzo facing 12 impaired-driving charges after deadly crash | National Post

Following the accident a Go Fund Me page was set up with a goal of $5000.

I assumed that the monies would help them with funeral expenses which can be quite exorbitant.

I heard this morning that the total amount donated has reached in excess of $185K.

While I can understand the need to help this family in their time of need, I can’t get my head around the disparity that exists in charitable donations these days.

Re: Online Fundraising

Yes this practice has been becoming fairly common these days.

My one elderly friend's daughter had cancer. So while she went into the very last stages she set up a page and Go fund me to get money for her last wish and that would be a trip to some European place. Unfortunately she passed away before she could do that but a lot of money was generated this way.

Now in your example I really cant think of a reason of how this money will be used to "lighten"up the family.. unless there is a survivor and its used for their treatment or further education etc.

Re: Online Fundraising

Well...I can imagine that a good amount (probably $15K/funeral) will be spent. And then I can imagine that if the parents of the deceased children need to take time off from work to grieve then some of the money could go to cover their bills in the event they are unable to earn.
But that still leaves a chunk of money.

Some have suggested that scholarships be set up in memory.......

I'm not sure what the law permits but the man charged comes from a very prominent and affluent family in Toronto. It's rumoured that the family has hired a PR firm to handle the negative publicity associated with this accident. I can only assume that they will have enough money to hire the very best legal firm as well. I wonder how that will impact due justice and if there may be a need for the family to file a civil suit, which will then also require funds to hire a lawyer.
