Online and Real-life Personalities

Most of us, if not all, who are regularly online and/or participate in discussion boards tend to develop an online persona. Some become “trolls” while others use the anonimity of the Internet to foster a new “personality” so to speak. And then there are those who are exactly the way they are online and offline with no pretense.

I have known people from real life and then saw their online personality and the two were worlds apart. I tend to be exactly the same in both ways (not that I’m saying its the best thing to be)…and I don’t mean two faced in a negative way, that someone is untrustworthy or something.

Your thoughts?

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

I’m more open with expressing my thoughts online… in real life, I’m a doormat :hinna:

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

this.

Not that my views change in real life but I guess I am more open here may be because there are no consequences attached to it.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

With me you get exactly what it says on the tin. ok, that’s not quite what i meant. DIY enthusiasts will perhaps know where i’m coming from :hmmm:

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

Thankyou for the warning. :bummer: makes a note

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

Its funny…I totally get your point, but I have felt the opposite on some occasions…where it was easy to say something in real life rather than online. :hehe:

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

well I am talking in general. off course there are moments/personalities with which you can be more expressive in real life.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

My views are the same as they're online to real life

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

Me too! Online anonymity allows one to express what you may be otherwise too self-conscious to say. Also, in person, people generally do lehaaz and will bite their tongue rather than get into a debate/argument. Online, you’re not so vested in the people you interact with so can let loose more than usual.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

Shak you seem like you would be.....

Well.....I think you guys are talking mostly about ones views and opinions on things.....rather than personalities.

I can get that a change in personality isn't a big deal, b/c sometimes you have to change your attitude according to your surroundings, but a change in views from online to offline....now that sounds hypocritical to me.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

na unfortunately my personality online is the same as in real, i get angry when somebody says something slimy online too. my flaws show through, can’t be a perfectionist online or real…it totally sux :bummer:

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

Oh, okay. My views/personality does not change between online versus offline. Rather, how open I am about those views may change.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

I am not what I am online. Online I might seem rude, I get in to fights, I take out my anger at other "nicknames" of gupshup. All of this is possible because in a way no one knows who I am. I am totally opposite offline. I don't get in to fights, I am shy, I can hardly talk, I am careful about making friends etc etc etc

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

From my experience, the few people who I have met from online boards tend to be somewhat more conservative in person. I'd say it's mostly due to what Sehrysh said.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

I think my real-life personality is similar to my online one. A difference would be that I think I'm more silly...or more of a big kid in real life (if I'm comfortable with you)...whereas "redvelvet" projects a more serious image.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

In real life I'm a six foot tall, rugby playing, fully bearded bloke. Online, I'm a dainty female.

Jokes aside, I have to reign in some aspects of my humour online due to inappropriateness. Offline, comfort level with loved ones means one can be as open as one feels.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

**I think in the virtual world we have the freedom to express facets of our character that we would normally suppress in the real world. **

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

I am quite shy and conservative online.

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

^ LMAO!! :rotfl:

Re: Online and Real-life Personalities

… I am the person online as I am in reality… u take me as I am… although Im a bit more “sillier” online:silly:
