Onion Rings

How do you make onion rings at home? I tried it last year during Ramzaan. I bought big sweet onions and cut them in 1/2 inch rings. Then I got some american fry batter instead of the usual besan and added namak, laal mirch and some black peppers. dipped the rings in the thick batter and fried. They came out allright. I had some difficulty in sticking the batter intact on the rings while frying.

Is there a desi recipe? I don’t think we eat onion rings in Pak.

Re: Onion Rings

We always had onion rings in Pakistan. My daadi would make some for the kids with left over besan from pakoras.

I just think you need to dust the onion with flour before dipping them in the batter to make them more crispy. I saw this on one of the foodnetwork programs. I personally hate fried foods so have never cooked them myself.

Re: Onion Rings

What your daadi made was 'bacha kucha' onions in 'bacha kucha' batter. Those weren't onions rings. I need some really good desi recipes if any.

I can't accept this recipe from a 'fried food hater'

Re: Onion Rings

yep, looks just like you. jalla huaa pakorra!

Re: Onion Rings

^^ yup, you must know what a jalla hua pakora looks like coz that is all you get to eat at iftaari. Now leave a rozaydaar alone. Mei ne tau sunna tha ke Ramadan ke maheenay mei shaitaan ko band kar diya jata hai..........laikin tum phir azad ho gaye ho>???

Re: Onion Rings

Here's an easy recipe, was taken off the net originally...

2 big sweet onions, peeled and sliced thin into rings

-2 eggs

1/2 cup buttermilk

coating mixture
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs

-oil (for frying)

  • Heat the oil to about 350 degrees.
  • In a small bowl whisk together buttermilk and eggs.
  • In a bowl mix together the coating mixture, then place into a shallow dish (a shallow dish makes for easier coating of the rings).
  • Dip/coat the onion rings into the buttermilk mixture.
  • Then coat generously into the dry coating mixture.
  • Fry in hot oil (turning once) until onion rings are lightly brown on both sides.
