1 in 6 is from India
1 in 3 child marriage from india.
So twice the average rate.
Assuming child marriage eliminated in western society.
America 350m
Canada say 180
Europe say 300m
Australia plus NZ 50
Total close to 1 billion.
So india 1.2 billion out of 6 billion. 1 in a 5
Child marriage 1 in 3.
So disparity decreases.
There was a report from the Tribune that 42 pct of the 60 million child marriage - defined as < 18 - was from Pakistan. But India appears to beat Pakistan handily in the < 15 yrs category.

I wasn't thinking religion at all! What am I missing? Why does everything have to do with a specific religion?
After reading the article, I was curious as to what the 1 in 3 meant with respect to India to world population ratio with and without west. Ratio without west 1 in 5. Child marriage <15 yrs is 1 in 3. So yes rate is still higher than what would be normal based on population.
Then I was curious what the rate was in Pakistan. The article I mentioned stated stats for <18. So I simply included that. And ACKNOWLEDGED India is still reigning champ for less than 15.
What i did was an honest attempt for fact finding. And my finding was the article u posted is legit.
Religion, and specifically Islam, never crossed my mind. All the countries listed have high rate of poverty.
Would be nice if you didn't simply jump to conclusions.

Moving on - the article looks at percent of women in 20 to 49 age bracket that got married below 15 yrs. India was 6th. Looks like poverty and probably lack of education was key driver. Bangladesh was I think 2nd.
Why the 20 to 49 category? Yes it gives CUMULATIVE position. But says nothing of the trend. Wonder if there is a study that addresses how the trend is for child marriage. And also what the CURRENT stats are. And which countries in the top based on CURRENT stats.
Cause including stats for a 49 yr old that got married 34 plus years ago is useful when considered as part of Trend. May be misleading if included in cumulative figures WITHOUT including trend.
