Almost one in five Americans now die from obesity-related conditions.
Such is the increasing rate of obesity that experts have warned it could lead to a decline in US life expectancy.
Some 18 per cent of Americans will die from obesity, far in excess of the previous estimates of five per cent, researchers at Columbia University said.
While obesity is on the decline in some groups, the numbers of young people who are grossly overweight remains at record highs.
Report author Dr Ryan Masters said: ‘Obesity has dramatically worse health consequences than some recent reports have led us to believe.
‘A five-year-old growing up today is living in an environment where obesity is much more the norm than was the case a generation or two ago. Drink sizes are bigger, clothes are bigger, and greater numbers of a child’s peers are obese.’
Dr Masters warned the worst was far from over, adding: ‘Once someone is obese, it is very difficult to undo. So it stands to reason that we won’t see the worst of the epidemic until the current generation of children grows old.’
They are lucky, now a days, one in every five Indians die because of mosquitoes :D
lol...and, how many mosquitos die as a result of biting a fat person's cholesterol laden blood? any statistics on that? :D
The obesity is itself a disease and give birth to new diseases as the ratio of this disease is quite high in US rather than other countries. There are numerous humanitarian organizations working for the welfare of general public health but if you want to see the accurate result then you have to change the minds of the people to control the world biggest disease which is obesity.
