One held in Goa over child rape

**One person has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a nine-year-old Russian girl in Goa, India, a senior police official said.**Bosco George told BBC News that the man is an employee at a pharmacy in Goa, and an “accomplice of the main accused”, who has absconded.

On Thursday, the police had named two men in connection with the assault at the Arambol beach on Tuesday.

A British teenager was raped and killed while holidaying in Goa in 2008.

Senior police official Bosco George said that Anil Raghuvanshi, one of the two people named by the police in connection with the assault, was arrested from a bus stand in Panaji town.

He said the man was working with a friend, identified as Aman Bharadwaj, who was the main accused.

The police believe that Mr Raghuvanshi engaged the mother of the girl on the beach on Tuesday, while his friend assaulted the girl.

‘Abhorrent crime’

The Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin has demanded urgent action against the people responsible for the assault on the girl.

“This perverted criminal must be caught and punished severely. Can you imagine a crime like that on a nine-year-old Unfortunately, this is not the first case of this nature and we expect the Indian side to catch the culprits involved in the abhorrent crime,” Mr Kadakin was quoted as telling reporters by India’s The Hindu newspaper.

A 25-year-old Russian woman was allegedly raped by a local politician in Goa last December.

The body of a teenage Russian girl was found on the railway tracks in the Thivim area last year. Reports say the police have not been able to make any headway in the case.

In February 2008, the body of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling from Britain was found on a beach in Anjuna.

Two men were held in connection with the case, and were later released on bail. The police say that investigations are still on.

Goa is India’s best known tourist destination and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors from India and abroad every year.
