One dead as Kyrgyz rivals clash

**The interim government in Kyrgyzstan says it has regained control of administrative buildings in the southern city of Osh.**Supporters of the ousted president seized the buildings, in Osh and other southern cities, on Thursday.

They appear to have remained in control of government buildings in Jalalabad, although there are reports of clashes and shots being heard in both cities.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was overthrown last month.

It followed a violent uprising that left 85 people dead. He fled with his family to Belarus, and was replaced by the interim government.

But tensions remain high across the country as the government attempts to assert its authority.

Some 250 Bakiyev supporters stormed the government buildings in Osh on Thursday morning, having briefly scuffled with pro-government supporters outside.

Sacked regional governor Mamsadyk Bakirov was said to be among the protesters, who were demanding his reinstatement.

Later in the day, around 100 anti-government protesters broke into and occupied local government buildings in Jalalabad - Mr Bakiyev’s home city - and Batken. There were also reports that airports in Osh and Jalalabad had been disrupted.

By the evening, the government had taken back offices in Batken but were unable to clear the buildings in Jalalabad of Mr Bakiyev’s supporters.

The interim government says it is in control of the situation and has sent its defence minister to help restore order.

But the BBC’s Central Asia correspondent Rayhan Demytrie says this is the biggest challenge so far for the provisional government. This article is from the BBC News website. © British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
