Shotgun Shah Rukh is on the prowl. He might not exactly be a Mel Gibson or a Bruce Willis, an Alain Delon or an Arsene Lupin, but he will do as a desi thulla. Keeping him company on his capers is a lass with a Haryanvi accent, Juhi Chawla.

When producer Nazir Ahmed, after his success with ‘Khuda Gawah’, joined hands with the promising director Shashilal Nair for a film called ‘Pagla Kahin Ka’, every one in the trade sat up and took notice. This was three or four years back. Since then, a lot of water has flown under the bridge and Shashilal has seen his second film, ‘Grahan’, biting the dust at the box office.

‘Pagla Kahin Ka’ has finally sees the light of day, but with a new nomenclature, ‘One 2 Ka 4’. Hero Shah Rukh may have boosted his sagging fortunes with ‘Mohabbatein’, but has a long way to go before he can claim that he is hot property again, after the debacle of ‘Dil Se’ and ‘Badshah’. In this film, he plays Arun Verma, a cop in the CBI’s Special Task Force, who is a daredevil character. When he’s not bursting through glass roofs or jumping from skyscrapers, he is cajoling kids with a song and dance act. He tries every trick in the bag but somehow it is not sufficient.

Juhi Chawla plays Geeta, a Haryanvi kudi, with gay abandon. Chirpy and aggressive, Geeta is all sunshine and light, with some peppy dialogue invented for her by Sanjay Chhel. Juhi reminds us of the days of ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’. She is stunning in the song sequences, ‘Khamoshiyan Gungunane Lagin’ and ‘Sona Nahin Na Sahi, Chandi Sahi Na Sahi’. Costumes designers Neeta Lulla and Anna Singh have worked hard to give her a fresh look, so what if she is married and the mother of a sweet girl.

Jackie Shroff plays the loveable Javed Bhai. As the honest and sincere officer, you can’t help but respect him. As the patient and adoring father, you can’t help but love him. And, when a dastardly ambush kills him, you can’t but weep for him.

The film has a very poor story line. Manoj Lalwani and Raajkumar Daahima seem to have been influenced by films like ‘Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke’, ‘Badshah’ and ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’. Shahshilal’s direction is sloppy. The opening scenes are ridiculous and the climax is a big letdown. He fails to maintain the tempo and the various strands in the film are not woven together well.

Nitin Desai tries hard to give the desired ambience to the film by creating some innovative sets and S. Kumar excels in cinematography. But the editing is poor. The music, considering that A.R.Rehman is in charge, fails miserably. Not even a single song makes the grade.
