After knowing the meaning of Underground, can you explain to us how the public, or the media has violated the value of the word? If you think they have.
To answer your second question first, they have not violated the word; they have massacred it! Underground is now taken either as a buzzword or as a phase in every artist’s life… in reality it is neither. Unsigned artists are “called” underground since a label has not yet signed them yet. Signed artists cannot be called underground since they are subject to the wishes of the record label as to what kind of music (even down to the name of the album) is to be created by the artist. Obviously, with such kind of control over the artist, how can one be called underground? Most artists these days aspire to be signed by record labels. Naturally they have to make music that is appealing to the sponsor/label to get signed… So how can you expect me to call such people underground? And how can you yourself call them underground even if they are not signed yet? Underground, is not just someone’s tool to get famous… it is a philosophy geared towards freedom of thought and expression and geared away from the adulteration of commercialism. That is my take on the meaning of the word Underground.
