On this day special feature. D day.

Ever since I first learned about the events of June the 6th 1944 from countless books and interviews as well as various seminars and case studies the one that sticks out most is the famous book by Cornelius Ryan imortalised in the eponymous film the Longest Day which was a Hollywood masterpiece and a truly epic film on a grand scale with over 40 top actors from around the world.

D-Day happened this very day and was among the most important battles of the 20th Century the supposed turn of the War in Europe.

But was it really?

Some have come to suggest that in reality D-Day was a farce and the true reasons for the invasion by the Allies was to counter the push of the Soviets and thus secure half of Europe from the Communists?

What do you guys think?

What aspects of the events of this day have fascinated you becuase for the last 60 odd years it’s certainly been one of the pivotal events in modern History.

Please discuss.

Re: On this day special feature. D day.

the most fascinating thing was the sheer bravery with which both sides fought the war, allied landings on various places from Utah to omaha and the determination with which they fought with each other was most fascinating.

west ignored Hitler's rise as they thought rise of Hitler is anti soviets, Hitler in his own memoir 'mein kampf' stated that he hated Communism. the operation against Hitler wouldn't have succeeded if Hitler had fought on just one front, two front war brought down third Reich.

without soviet support, west might have not dislodged Hitler. may be not on D Day but later as war progressed Soviets were part of the Grand Strategy. Hitler was a great general, able commander but he faired poorly in his foreign policy decisions. Never allow all your enemies to form an alliance said the great chankya.
