^Hanah kabaah is not the masjid, the masjid is the compound area surrounding it (masjid al harraam) and it does have minarets!
Though you do raise a good point, masjids may not neccasarily need minarets, i used to pray in a theatre in some countries during namaaz e eid becuase there were no Masjids so perhaps this is a question for Islamic scholars to address?
