On-Campus jobs

I’m sure a lot of you have/had on-campus jobs while studying. Were any of these jobs helpful in getting permanent employment after graduation? Also, what kind of positions are most useful?
I’ve had work experience on-campus as a cashier at cafeteria, a teaching assistant and now i’ve a new job as a teaching assistant for ESL classes  Alhamdulillah.
It would be nice if you people could share your experiences here.

I worked as an undergrad research assistant to my advisor, That helped me land an internship and my first job.

i have also worked/volunteered in my highschool and uni and it has helped me get my job..

High School: Volunteered as a Java TA, for the programming class for 1 yr, got some teaching experience and then that summer i got a teaching job at a local institute for teaching Java

1st Yr Uni:

  1. Worked partime at a Dollar store, got myself a summer job at the same dollar store.
2 in university at Graphics Office. Got me a job as an Office Admin that summer same place as i was working..

2nd yr Uni:
Worked as office Admin (for different department) and got myself a job as a Junior Software Developer, developing the main registeration system for the upcoming web-registration system.

YUP it HELPS a lot if you do something while ur studying.. i think it gave me the experience and personal skills that i lacked.. my english wasn’t that good interms to verbal communication, that got better after working awhile with different ppl .. it sure helps and inshaAllah i will get my permenant job after i graduate..

I already have a job offer, for the next Fall/Winter semester (parttime) as a programmer so probably i will be working again :slight_smile: the whole yr and {save up money to go to Pakistan :)}

try finding a job asap .. inshaAllah it will help you alot in ur future job hunting.

best of luck :k:

Im working as a computer lab specialist, but alot of the ppl who graduated already and worked with me said it helped them find jobs later on.

I really want to work as a research assistant for one of my professors but I've heard he makes you work wayyy beyond your stated hours and doesn't even compensate you for that. I don't know if that kind of work will be worth it since I'll be taking pretty heavy courses next sem.

^ your resume is not going to state how much you were being paid for that research. its the experience that counts. what you have to decide is whether you can accomodate work with ur studies. cause' studies should be ur first priority.

it would be a good idea to talk to the professor himself and see how things work out from there.

on a side note..don't believe in everything you hear. :~)

I have been working as a ta for quite sometime now. And I have also worked as an ra. [both at undergrad level] ofcourse the type of research u do and the course which you ta for does make a difference too. nevertheless, such experiences play a vital role in helping you get a job. specially, if you are planning to go to grad school.

Thanks heartbeat. You're right. I shouldn't listen to other people. Maybe they were just lazy :)

np!! Well, now this doesn't mean that you don't have to listen to them..
:-D It's always a good idea to hear ppl out and make ur own decision. Everybody talks from his or her own experience.
