A flare is basically a countermeasure employed by military aircraft against heat-seeking missiles. So instead of going for the aircraft, the missile will just follow the heat signature of the flare and thus the aircraft can evade attacks. This aircraft is the AC-130 (Variant of the famous C-130 Hercules) and is used in a ground-attack role. One of my friends flies the C-130 out of Chaklala for the Pakistani Airforce.
